BTO’s Vanderbilt Postgame Report

It’s interesting to me, but if you think about it this Tennessee team is not only flying under the radar with some of our fans, but with college basketball analysts as well.

We’re almost certainly going to be in the AP Top 15 tomorrow, we’re #11 in KenPom, #10 in NET, we are one of a handful of teams with a Top 30 AdjO and Top 10 AdjD, and we’re sitting in 3rd place in one of the best CBB conferences this year.

Yet, when I listen to pre-shows on ESPN, CBS, Fox Sports, etc. there is almost no chatter about Tennessee.

I think that might be a good thing for this team. It feels like Barnes does his best work when his teams are not being talked about. Can’t wait for Tuesday. This is a chance to get a BIG win and position themselves for a high-seed in March.

It’s funny how TN can consistently have 15 +/- leads get whittled away rather than continuing to expand them while games become yawners on TV. It’s almost like the SEC refs want to even things up. Kind of like when one team commits 10 fouls (because they are bad) while the other team has 2… but suddenly the team with 2 fouls can’t help themselves from going on crazy fouling runs.

BTW, one ref was calling a lot of fouls drawn by Pippen (8?) while refusing to call ANY on TN.

1. You can look at last nights game a few different ways, probably feel like it shouldn’t have been as close as it was or that we shouldn’t handled a team like Vanderbilt at home. Then you consider though the late Wednesday game in Starkville, having to travel back for quick turnaround, playing an instate rivals that is improving, a team you’ve beaten 9x in a row and is trying to break that streak, and a team that just a weeks ago had UK in a 3pt game at Rupp Arena with about 8 minutes remaining before they went on to win by 7(77-70) and suddenly you feel a just a bit happier to have found a way to win. Tennessee had its moments where they got up 13+ and you thought were gonna pull away and maybe they should have, that’s something they can work on, but still found a way to get the W they really couldn’t afford to lose.

2. Tennessee did not shoot the ball well, which considering how they’ve shot the last few games was probably bound to happy at some point. The good news was that they found a way to win still: rebound, defense, limit turnovers, hit free throws. For the most part those things are pretty controllable and if you do them you’ll have a good chance to win even if you’re having a colder shooting night, on nights you’re hitting shots then it makes you really tough to beat. We weren’t awful from 3 and really it was JJJ’s 1-7 that dragged us down, but the way he’s shot lately you live with that and hope he’s hot the next game.

3. Speaking of JJJ, the man could not buy a shot from the field 2-14fg and 1-7 from 3…but he had 10 rebounds, 2 blocks and was against huge for our defense. Him staying aggressive offensively was good to see, it’s what this team needs to be it’s best offensively and he was getting good looks, sometimes you just have a cold night but it was good to see him continue to look to score and even drive it to the hoop aggressively.

4. I made a post yesterday asking is ZZ a 6th MOY candidate? He likely doesn’t win it, Tari Eason is a great player and UK has a good candidate as well in Davion Mintz, but ZZ made his case against last night. Ends up with 2nd most minutes on the team, 16pts 5ast 0t, over his last 6 games he’s 15/27 for 56% from 3 after starting the year cold. We heard he’s a phenomenal shooter and early in the year there were some doubts, but maybe it was adjusting to speed or length of game at this level but man is he shooting it of late. Regardless, he’s playing really well obviously and continues to make Vol fans excited about the future.

5. My negative is foul trouble…this team has had a habit of late getting itself into foul trouble, mainly the guards, and that is becoming a trend and in issue. Vescovi does it quite a bit and tonight Chandler joined him, both of those guys are too important to this team to be riding the bench, they’ve gotta play smarter…same for ZZ and JJJ, they were fine last night but have had their recent foul troubles too, those 4 guys have to be better. With Vescovi on the court we were +21 yesterday, without him we were -12, he’s great offensively, another ball handler, great passer, underrated defender and really spaces the floor with his shooting ability, we need him out there along with the other guards. We talk about wanting to play small ball 4+1 and that it’s our best grouping, but that’s hard to do if 1-2 of your guards are in foul trouble nightly.

6. During this stretch they’ve also seemingly picked things up on the offensive end, averaging 79ppg in that span and seeing their offensive rating on KenPom rise from around 55 post Texas to Top 30 as of today. It’s widely considered that to be a balanced and one of the better teams you need to be Top 25 in both categories, and a couple weeks ago that seemed near impossible a goal for this Vols team to reach offensively, but they’ve really picked it up and is a big part of the win streak. The defense needs to stick around because it’s carries on the road and with you game to game, but continue to play with that offensive movement and pace and let it keep flying from 3 when you have those open looks. Would be nice to see the O climb into the Top 20 while defense remains Top 10, would make us among the Top 8-10 on KenPom and indicate we are really playing well.

7. Big picture reset…we entered this 4 game stretch predicted to go 3-1, said that would be solid but if you found a way to go 4-0 it would really build some momentum and possibly change the trajectory of this team. Well they went 4-0 and are building momentum, they’re climbing bracket seed lists and are a fringe 3/4 seed as of this morning, they’ve really positioned themselves well with some big upcoming opportunities, but that also means things get tougher. We are 18-6(9-3) with 6 remaining, you hope 3-3 is the floor and 4-2 would feel good, anything better would be amazing and anything less than 3-3 would really be disappointing finish. We start the first week with 2 Q1 opportunities, home against Kentucky and on the road at Arkansas, both of these are going to be tough games and require great showings, true 50/50 games…splitting these 2 would be considered a good thing. I’m really hoping we see TBA rocking and that we can start out the week with a W against Kentucky, would take some pressure off heading to Arkansas and would make the race for 2nd place a bit more interesting as well, would also get some national recognition…not to mention we owe them one!

GBO!!!
Hard to stay our of foul trouble when the refs are wearing black and gold. I know Vescovi had two called on him that were BS, and there were others.

If you could just take Pippen's last name off the back of his jersey it would reduce his free throw attempts in half.

One guy that has a disappointing game was Mashack, he's going to need to contribute particularly when we have foul trouble. He was so passive on the offensive end that it led to a couple turnovers. He caught the ball at the top of the key without anyone remotely close to him. Instead of shooting a wide open 3, he decided to drive the ball and didn't even really manage to get up a shot and got a shot clock violation. When he gets his chance he needs to make the most of it.

I think we are about to find out Tuesday…huge game and talented opponent, if we were to jump out big early maybe it doesn’t happen but if it’s close and no foul trouble I will be curious for sure.
As it applies to the small lineup, I think the key to beating them is keeping their big man from dominating the game. I think we’ll need all the bigs we have and maybe even more, that is unless they hit 90% from 3 again.

Idk that throwing a bunch of our bigs at their big is gonna be the way to outplay them, I don’t see any of our bigs having much success against Tschiebwe, I actually think we’d have a better chance of neutralizing him by going small and making him chase our guys on switches and run up and down the court. A case can be made we have a better backcourt than UK, there’s no case that can be made that we have a better frontcourt.

eigler played better than Chandler who only had 6 points to go with the foul trouble.

Aidoo and Huntley-Hatfield played their roles and will be needed to get Tshib in foul trouble Tuesday night.

If I am Barnes, I would run Bailey and Mashack and James at Grady and try to limit his looks.

Fulkerson was the player of the game last night.

I hope that Pippen will go pro after this season. He almost single handely kept Vanderbilt in the game last night with those 23 points.

Let Uros thug it up a bit on their bigs then throw the 4 point guard lineup at them.

Yup, don’t mind that…wouldn’t mind seeing Aidoo/BHH get their chances at the 5 too and tell them to face up from 18’…pull him away from the basket and give them the green light, especially Aidoo.

Hard to stay our of foul trouble when the refs are wearing black and gold. I know Vescovi had two called on him that were BS, and there were others.

The single worst call was JJJ, Chandler had one for sure, maybe 2 that were not within the realm of reason. As I said in another thread the bias was blatantly visible on the Fulky block that never left Pacmans hands that he juggled with two hands before he guided it to the floor and NO jumpball nor traveling call. Then they doubled down on the walking call they blew off with the bobble call.... that one even got Barnes protest. Glad we won, hate having to eat truth by not wanting to look like a sore loser. One more was the walking call on Fulky I think it was along the baseline when he CLEARLY never possessed the ball and was trying to save it from OOB. Sure would like to see our official post game report on officials for this game by the staff.

At the end of the day I don't think this team has enough offensive talent to beat good athletic teams that can play defense. We've been better the last two+ weeks, for sure, mostly thanks to JJJ's improved shooting, but can that last? When you don't have any real reliable inside scoring, your outside shooting has to be consistently good--and has to be very good to beat really good opponents--and I think that's going to be a problem in the tourney. We will absolutely have to bring our best defense going forward--and bring it every game--to compensate for the scoring struggles we're destined to have.

I think that it will take more than a three-point threat coupled with inside scorers. I think that good teams can protect the rim and guard the 3PL. I think that the mid-range offense must also be highly productive to prevent defenses from committing to only protecting the rim and shutting down the 3-point opportunities. Guys that can hit 75% of their free throws surely can develop a 10-12 foot, barely contested shot that they hit 60% of the time.

Vanderbilt has absolutely nothing in the post. In other words they have should have no ability to exploit our weakness. That's the kind of team we should match up well with and pull away from. [...] I think the next step for this team is to separate from these teams. We have been consistently beating teams on their level, so this is not a strong complaint. If we don't start putting teams away it could come back to bite us at the wrong time.

The 3-point shot is to college basketball what the aerodynamics of the Car of Tomorrow was to NASCAR. Even when you're dominating the court in multiple aspects, it makes it tough to pull away.

(I guess to extend the metaphor, SEC refs are the yellow flag for debris that only France-eyes can see.)

Yes. The 3-PL needs to match the NBA distance. And the NBA needs to back it up another foot.

He did have a nice offensive rebound and putback for an and 1.

When did Vandy start playing like a bunch of thugs ?
Is that a Stackhouse thing ?
They play similar to LSU.

I did say, VY was not going to be a walk in the park.
They are vastly improved.. due to 3 pt shooting % and ... free throws.
I did think this was a potential trap game. We were a little overconfident.
We got the win... on a poor shooting night from a couple of players.
Now, we can focus on Kentucky.
Did you hear that RB gave Fulky the option to start or come off the bench? Fulky lobbied to come off the bench!
Another thot of mine, Barnes is trying to rest his players. That is one of the reasons why we see the substitutions that often confound and confuse us. (Some of us may have even stronger negative feelings.) This might lead to losses in the short term, but the end goal is to have a rested and healthier team (and a deeper and more fully developed team) when March arrives.
The KY game IS a tossup! I think we win, but the refs may decide this one.
@BTO - Excellent.

That would mean we are a Top 3 offense which paired with Top 6 defense would make us the #1 team in the nation on KenPom…not sure that’s a fair statement.
Didn’t say we would do it, nor do I expect it given our offensive lapses. An extra made FT, and three 2 pt buckets….is 7 pts. This year we miss far too many FTA, too many point blank layups, etc…to be a upper echelon team. Why we won’t go far in tournament unless we improve our offense. Still, we are looking at a successful year regardless. Next two games will show us a hint if we have it in us. Chandler is the most talented guy on the roster. He and anyone who can raise their level of play in the frontcourt would make it interesting.

I would like to see BHH & Aidoo both get a shot to go head to head. Show them where they need to get to be elite bigs in this conference.

Your about to get your wish on Tuesday night! Oscar T is the real deal ... You can see how those freshman match up against a junior.

I just felt like we were gonna pull away like the South Carolina game. We just lost a little entensity and they made some tough shot to their credit.
