Butch Expects More From Tailbacks

And the thread title is telling. They look the same as last year apparently. Which is hardly a surprise, as they are the same players.

Neal has always been hesitant and gets tackled by the foot entirely too much for a starting rb in the SEC. Seems like a good person, but with his speed and size, he should be hitting the hole with force and looking for daylight for his speed. That he is listed as so fast in the 40 and 100, but hasn't had a breakaway run says a lot.

He has the ability to run hard because he turned it on in the red zone a few times last year, but we need a guy that will run just as hard on our 30 as he would on their 5....what I said that got me called out was Lane ran harder than Neal, by hitting the hole with authority, as to where Neal has a tendency to dance in the hole. Neal seems like a class act, but as far as performance, he has ability but needs to be more consistent with how he runs

I think CG will have these RB ready to play when the season opens...that's all I need...I like this RB coach...he gets it and tends to be more of a verbal coach

imo, i just don't think Neal has great feel at the rb postion, as far as holes, cutbacks, vision and instinct.

Bottom line these guys are not game changers. Never have been.
These guys have better physical tools than many other backs. Speed and size is not the issue. But u cant teach vision, wiggle or instinct. U also cant teach them to love contact. So they will have to make the most with what they do have.

I actually thought they were effective. Not stellar, but effective. Keep in mind, that was Raijon's first time as the go-to guy. Lane was also still affected by the mental aspect of his knee at times. He wasn't making the cuts he could make in high school. I think we see a big improvement in both of them this year. I'm just hoping we can hold on to the ball.

Were fairly effective. Didn't finish runs well. A 5 yd run was a 5 yd run. A 10yd run was a... 10 yd run. An elite back turns several of those opportunities into huge gainers/tds.

Butch is not the only one who expects more from our RB's.....unfortunately we play in the toughest conference in America......it's been awhile since we had truly good SEC backs

Yes, they were effective. But not game changers. HUGE difference between the two. We need a big time back. One who breaks tackles and scores touchdowns. Not one who virtually tackles themselves.

Well, "effective" is what you said they weren't, and what a couple of us were disagreeing with.

Neal should be 2nd string rb and should be our go-to on returns. Lane runs harder

I think Every Vol fan that draws breath knows we need more explosiveness from our backs . JMOIMOTIFWIW

Edit: That btw is not a dig at our players , just well the truth.

It is the same backs that were not effective runners last season. It is not surprising at all that they are not markedly better.

Effectively unimpressive, yes they were.

Schizophrenia is fun.

It's not brain surgery to get what he is saying. They were effective, but not effective enough. That's the point. Jesus.

Hard to be effective when the defense knows you're about to run the ball. UT's offense last year was the most predictable offense I've ever seen.

Neal and Lane are good enough as a combo to get the job done. You can't run three run plays out of two formations and expect great success.
