Look at this through a potential hire's eyes. I read this point of view in some article last night.

You're asked to be the coach at Tennessee. You're gonna have to leave a less stressful situation. MNF, Louisville, Oklahoma St., or any other place that is not the SEC. If you do take the job you gotta take an underdog into Oregon next year. You play UF, GA, BAMA, USCe, every year. You rotate teams like LSU, TA&M, and some other talented West teams. You also risk your current easy chair job and in three years you could be like Dooley searching for some DII School to give you a job. Or get hired on as an assistant for someone else. Butch Jones never hesitated and accepted the offer pretty quickly it seems. Let's give the guy a dang chance. This guy knows what he's up against and he still took the job. Let's give him some credit for that.

Imagine when he was standing on the sideline last year when we played Cincy. He has to realize the potential this place has. He knows our history, our facilities, the money he'll have to recruit with. He wants this challenge when everyone wimped out. That's shows he has guts. Go Vols!

These are the threads that make sense. I love the hire. But all the arrogant and ignorant will bash the hire.

Not trying to be Debbie Downer but Dooley wasnt scared 3 years ago either. Maybe Jones turns out to be good but ya'lls logic is a cover to make you feel better about it.

While this does seem like deja vu from the coaching search 3 years ago, at least Jones has a winning track record to be from a middle of the pack school. The Dools did not. I am not overly excited but it is time for us to be honest with ourselves...this isn't the UT from the 90s. We need to get back to that point before this is a top 5 destination for top coaches. Hopefully, we won't have to be looking for a while.

Just give him a chance. Don't judge cuz I'm sure he will be coaching better than any of us could. See what he can do with all Tennessee has to offer.

Very, very, very excellent post. You just yanked my mind back from the brink of insanity. I wasn't thinking clearly. Thank you.

I am gonna support him because its not his fault, but lets step back and look at the big picture here. We just hired a head football coach at the UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE and all we can say is "at least he isn't scared". No slam on Coach Jones because everybody starts somewhere and maybe be is the next real deal, but that speaks volumes about what our administration thinks. We settled plain and simple. Name another successful team in the SEC that just settled. Dang I wanna punch someone in the face!

There is no reason not to 100% support Jones. He wanted this job - bad. He walked away from an almost finalized deal with Colorado because he heard TN was still available. He is willing to take on this huge challenge so support this coach.

Be mad as hell - like me - at the TN administration and call for the firing of Hart and Cheek.

I respect him for wanting to do bigger and better things. I don't respect that coward Strong.

I understand your point. But, DD had a loosing record when he came to UT. Jones has a winning record and 2 conference championships in a better conference then DD.

Im not saying this is gonna work. He might go 0-8 in SEC play two years in a row....but he might also win a SEC title in 2015. No one knows how this will play out so all im trying to do is plead with fans to just go with it and wish for the best.

He's not top tier...but he might become top tier. All the top tier coaches turned us down. Its time to give this man his shot.

I can understand where you're coming from, I wish we could have made the big name hire too. Strong would have been an awesome hire as well as Gruden. I think the point you made about Dooley not being scared either is not the same as this situation. You add on three more years of losing by Tenn and three more years of winning by our biggest rivals and the pressure is far greater. Especially at a place like Tenn. Bottom line is all I care about at this point. And the bottom line is supporting this coach gives us the best chance to win now.

I agree with everything you said, however that is part of the problem. We have the $ and resources to hire differently. Im behind our coach now, but dang why do we keep doing this to ourselves. We had to get this one right. Maybe we did in time, but Hart paniced plain and simple.

He has two jobs in the next three years. First, the team needs to show improvement from one year to the next. Second, he needs to get a big dog at least once. I don't know what a reasonable expectation for win/loss should be considering the shamble of a defense we have, but I figure if he can steal one from UGA/UF/Bama and beat the teams we're supposed to beat in the next 3 years then he'll probably work out.

Jones is a winner! That is more than the whiners sitting at their computer in their underwear bashing him cn say for themselves! He is excited about the new challenge and he looks intense enough for the battles ahead!

Dooley never showed the fight it takes to win in the SEC, imo. I will support our new coach!!

GO VOLS!! Welcome Coach!!

I don't think people are bashing Coach Jones as they are bashing the situation. I would be ecstatic if Hart proves me wrong, but you at least have to admit this whole coaching search thing went weird. I might feel differently if Coach Jones was Hart's guy from the get-go, but we went thru all those names till we got were we are.
