Not trying to be Debbie Downer but Dooley wasnt scared 3 years ago either. Maybe Jones turns out to be good but ya'lls logic is a cover to make you feel better about it.

To be honest, Dooley was in over his head. I think most of us could tell that by week 1 or the LSU game his first year.

I have no worries about that with Butch Jones. The guy can coach, and we won't look lost with him. We won't make stupid mistakes on the field with him, and there will be discipline. It doesn't mean he will be successful, but we won't embarrass ourselves.

And I will say that he is good enough to make sure that Vand and Kentucky are back in their rightful places as a sure W.

There is no reason not to 100% support Jones. He wanted this job - bad. He walked away from an almost finalized deal with Colorado because he heard TN was still available. He is willing to take on this huge challenge so support this coach.

Be mad as hell - like me - at the TN administration and call for the firing of Hart and Cheek.
Yes, let's be very happy that we beat out Colorado for a coach. Brighter days are ahead.

Very, very, very excellent post. You just yanked my mind back from the brink of insanity. I wasn't thinking clearly. Thank you.

Your welcome, I wish everyone would calm down and just support the guy. Who else is out there that could guarantee they would do better. No one! The other guys turned it down for whatever reason. This guy didn't so let's support him. I've also read a lot of people out there bashing Hart and Cheek. What do they expect them to do. Hold Gruden at gunpoint until he signs the contract. C'mon, really. If their first choices say no, you move on to the next best guy. And no matter what people think there is only so much money they can spend. I think I read that Strong was offered 3.75 million a year for like 4 or 5 yrs? And who knows what they might have paid Gruden. There's only so many legendary coaches out there to fall in your lap. If the stars had lined up for us the way they did for Bama, then maybe we could have hired Saban from the Dolphins, but they DIDN'T!

Butch Jones is a good football coach, and I am glad we have him. I wanted him over Strong. We tried to make the big hire and it did not work, but I think we ended up with a winner. I am born and raised East Tennessee, and am very proud of that fact, Tennessee football is in my roots. I will support CBJ(we need to work on that acronym) fully. So for those of you who say you are done with UT, bye, go buy a bama jersery or a A&M hat. Real Vol fans don't need you. In fact I feel sorry for you not a single one of you have any Grit.

Look at this through a potential hire's eyes. I read this point of view in some article last night.

You're asked to be the coach at Tennessee. You're gonna have to leave a less stressful situation. MNF, Louisville, Oklahoma St., or any other place that is not the SEC. If you do take the job you gotta take an underdog into Oregon next year. You play UF, GA, BAMA, USCe, every year. You rotate teams like LSU, TA&M, and some other talented West teams. You also risk your current easy chair job and in three years you could be like Dooley searching for some DII School to give you a job. Or get hired on as an assistant for someone else. Butch Jones never hesitated and accepted the offer pretty quickly it seems. Let's give the guy a dang chance. This guy knows what he's up against and he still took the job. Let's give him some credit for that.

Imagine when he was standing on the sideline last year when we played Cincy. He has to realize the potential this place has. He knows our history, our facilities, the money he'll have to recruit with. He wants this challenge when everyone wimped out. That's shows he has guts. Go Vols!

Very good points in this post. But the whole truth is when a head coach leaves Tennessee, they don't have to take anything. They can sit on a beach drinking crown and watching bikini clad women all day if they want.

I don't think people are bashing Coach Jones as they are bashing the situation. I would be ecstatic if Hart proves me wrong, but you at least have to admit this whole coaching search thing went weird. I might feel differently if Coach Jones was Hart's guy from the get-go, but we went thru all those names till we got were we are. maybe this all happened for a reason.

For so many years I heard people say how they wish Tennessee would go after a big name proven coach. And now we have an AD that tried and he's being crucified for it. We tried with Gruden and Strong. What do people expect these AD's to do? Beliema, not sure that's correctly spelled, at Ark? I wouldn't be too excited about that. Not upset with it but no more optimistic than with Jones. Gus Malzhan at Aub? Yet another up and comer with nothing proven yet. Coordinators can be good at what they do, but that doesn't mean they're cut out for a head coach. All you can do is look at a guy's body of work. What he has done so far in his career. How he is perceived by his peers? I mean all it really is, is a huge gamble. There are only a handful of coaches out there that are a sure thing. And we're not getting them! Saban? Spurrier? Meyer? BELLICHICK?! C'mon people!

While this does seem like deja vu from the coaching search 3 years ago, at least Jones has a winning track record to be from a middle of the pack school. The Dools did not. I am not overly excited but it is time for us to be honest with ourselves...this isn't the UT from the 90s. We need to get back to that point before this is a top 5 destination for top coaches. Hopefully, we won't have to be looking for a while.

And as importantly, top 5 for top recruits.

Amen brother! I refuse to be a bandwagon fan. It makes me sick to think how people can do that. No Grit, backbone, or whatever you call it? If someone could even consider just trading in their UT gear for Bama gear, then they never were real fans in my opinion anyway.

I will support the Vols whole heartledly as I always have. But I don't really see how him wanting to prove himself in the SEC is anything big. Dooley wanted to prove himself in the SEC very badly. It didnt help him any. Just saying.

Yes they'll have that option, lol! Seriously though, I believe Dooley had his heart in it. Money never was the reason. He's a lawyer/coach and his wife is a freaggin Doctor. Man I wish I had his problems now, lol.

First ever post on here. I'm in Arky and I'm hear how excited they are about their new coach. I just wanted to support the new coach and say I'm excited about ours. I think he will do a great job here, he has a lot of coaching experience and has won conference championships.

Well this is the SEC! It is pretty big! The SEC is the mecca of college football. I mean the SEC has only won like the last six nat'l championships.

If you wanted to be the baddest fighter in the world, then you go to the UFC or Pride, right? You wouldn't go down to the local high school and wrestle would you?

Frankly I'll be shocked if Butch doesn't win the press conference today and win over the players we have. He's the anti-Dooley, he's fiery and will support the players. He may not be the sexy hire, but people will like him if they give him a chance. Hopefully he can produce on the field.

You don't have to be a bandwagon fan to be pissed off right now. Likewise, just because you are pissed off doesn't mean you are not going to support our coach. I have bought four season tickets for the last 20 years. That is $1400 just for the tickets with no other expense taken in to account. I'm just pissed off at our situation. Our coach better be good cause the deck is stacked against him.

Ok? The point is everyone who takes a job in the SEC wants to prove their worth. So not sure why Butch should be praised for it.

Well being pissed off at the situation is a different thing all together. Being pissed at this hire is hard for me to understand. Any true fan is pissed about our situation. The day we aren't pissed about losing will be the day we truly are at the Kentucky level. They've probably excepted the fact that they're not ever gonna be a championship caliber team. I'm glad you say you'll support the coach, because that is what this team needs to get better.

Well at least three other guys turned it down. And Tennessee is a unique situation. In state recruiting sucks, all time high level of competition, and the craziest and most passionate fan base in the country. Tennessee has to be one of the most challenging coaching jobs out there right now. Especially when you look at next year's schedule.
