Updated numbers to reflect USC win.*****************************
Folks. This is going to be a great game this weekend, but I have no doubt our guys will be ready.

Why? With 10+ days rest:

* Coach Jones' teams are 11-4, including bowl games.

* They have won 10 of the last 12.

* They have won 8 of the last 9.

* The last five victims are Va Tech, Vandy, Pitt, Louisville and South Carolina.

* The last loss came at West Virginia in 2010, a team that finished #22 in the BCS rankings.

* The loss at West Virginia is Butch's only loss with the full bye week, 14 days rest before a non-bowl game. Interestingly, WVU had 15 days rest before this one, having played on a Friday before a bye week.

* 3 of the 4 losses were by 3 points.

Now I fully expect South Carolina to come in here ready to play and knowing the fight they are in for. I still think we win 27-24 (won 23-21).

If for any reason the Gamecocks don't come in with the proper game motivation, they are gonna get Butch slapped hard.

Oh, and looking ahead we have a bye week before Vandy comes to Neyland and we will likely have the opportunity to eliminate them from bowl contention.

Some more fun stats:

Vols are 79-37-9 after an open date

General Neyland was 10-0-3 (6-0 SEC)

Butch is 1-0 (1-0 SEC)

Dooley was 1-2 (0-2 SEC)

Kiffin was 0-1 (0-1 SEC)

Fulmer was 25-8 (23-8 SEC)

Majors was 16-13-2 (3-12-2 SEC)

Battle was 7-2 (4-2 SEC)

Dickey was 8-0 (6-0 SEC)

Just for the record, I remember the WVU game he lost at Cinci, and they got hosed by the refs on something, can't remember what. Point is, they shoulda win that game against a much better WVU team at the time!

Great stats... The way to tell a coach's true skill is halftime adjustments and team record after a bye... I had been curious about his "week after bye" record myself... Just confirms more about Jones...

I think that was the following year in 2011. They got beat pretty good by WVU in 2010, but interestingly WVU was also coming off a bye week.

That is Butch's only loss with the full bye.

Wait, I'm going to add that that to the original post.

Ok, may have been. I just remember Cinci getting hosed one year against WVU. Nonetheless, still shows that he can prep!! Thanks for the stats!

Rifleman, that average score is almost identical to my prediction for Freak's "Pick the Score Contest" thread, wherein I predicted that the Big Orange would emerge victorious, 34-27.

What about "week-after-a-bye-in-year-one"? This is all good stuff - don't get me wrong. But he'll be better in this stat in years 2 and beyond IMO.

That's a great pick. I'm guessing it will be right around that win or lose unless things start to get sloppy.

There have only been 2 games that fit this criteria and 1 was Butch's only bye loss. If we lose Saturday, then 1-1 this year since Vandy is our 2nd bye game and we aren't starting a losing streak against Vandy.

Spurrier won't be looking ahead at all from his comments. He even admits Neyland is always a special place for him because of his childhood and going to watch Tennessee play with his dad.

However, his team might get caught off-guard. They're used to beating us and college players don't have long memories (don't know many college students who do - lol). The recent past is all they know. It may be difficult for them to see us as a threat and if that's the case I hope we take advantage of it.

Concussions, imo...

Lulz at all of you. Those stats mean absolutely nothing in regards to predicting the outcome of this Saturdays game. Different team, different opponent. Different conference, different year. Good grief.

irrelevent in that it probably is similar to his overall record regardless of time off.....But I'll cling to anything at this point. A Win is in the bag: :)
