In 6 years as a head coach he has finished first in his conference 4 times. I know the conferences weren't as big as the SEC but the players he had weren't SEC players either. What I'm saying is when all things are equal 4 out of 6 years he came out on top. Every great coach starts somewhere, we have to give the guy a shot if he is our guy.

I agree! Not sexy but honestly nobody wanted this job! He wanted this job and in my book that counts for a lot. Jones is a good football coach. Welcome aboard!

no one wants to listen to facts when it comes to Jones they just hear his name. Everything about his head coaching resume lines up with Charlie Strong who everyone was Ok with. I don't get it

I like Butch Jones. Not my first pick but He IS a good coach. Much better hire than Derrick Dooley was, by far !!!!

Unfortunately, he wouldn't be playing with Brian Kelly's players here.. Not a fan.. I'll take a retread before Jones..

He's ridden on coattails for several years and won with another coaches recruits.

There's zero proof that he can recruit top SEC type players and get us back to winning in the SEC.

I'd rather see AD Hart bump up the offer to $4.5 to $5 Million per year and go get a real coach that's also PROVEN that he can recruit top players against the best recruiters in the business.

We need a rock solid HOMERUN hire and we need it NOW because the SEC is only getting tougher.

VFL...GBO!!!

But all the home run hires turned us down. I do not know to whom you refer. Not saying you're wrong, but give me a name.

On Jones, we can't know if he can recruit SEC-caliber players until he actually comes to the SEC. I can name only 3 coaches who are capable of recruiting SEC talent at non-SEC schools. Chip Kelly, Jimbo Fisher, and USC's coach (hate him). And the last two are mere beneficiaries of their region.

(Edit: Urban Meyer as well.)

You can say he's ridden coattails, but he's also won. And his teams also improve year by year.

I'm not sold, but I'm most certainly in favor of the hire given our current circumstances.

You people so not realize that NO ONE wants to coach here.

The academic side of UT is crushing it

4 NFL guys contacted UT, it took this long dead period coming up, just hear some more interviews now until the right comes along. Don't settle, Jones seems like a settle hire!

I'll take the latter in these future matchups:
Butch Jones vs...
-Steve Spurrier
-Nick Saban
-Les Miles
-Will Muschamp
-Dan Mullen
-Chip Kelly (next season)
-Bob Stoops (next two seasons)

*On a positive note, he has beaten James Franklin

I am sure Jones is a fine coach but how is he going to be an elite recruiter in the SEC?

Exactly. This is why we needed a really big hire. Jones is surely better than Dooley but what on earth makes us think he can compete with these guys?
