Butch Jones: Xs and Os

This roster is the proverbial square peg in a round hole argument. It's also not SEC elite either. Butch has no clue how to run a traditional offense, and neither does Coach Jake, so it's going to look like a train wreck until people are put in the right positions to make plays.

Comparable to a Sinseri defense in Knoxville.

Coach Jones is saying and doing all the right things off the field. I love that about him. I hope he starts doing the same on the field if not I'll feel sorry for him after the next 2 seasons. I really hope he's our guy . Not so sure the staff is. The O-line took a step back ( pittman ) The D has Improved,. Not so sure we have the right Offensive coaches Though.

No way to judge the offense while Worley's running it. I would like to have seen the freshmen from day one, then some of the bumps in the road would be out of the way. There are coaches who have that philosophy, but they are few and far between. Butch is apparently very conservative on that, but that just puts him with the vast majority of college coaches.

And again, I'll say, these are essentially the same defensive players who were the worst in UT history. We still lack depth and run out of gas in the second half. We still lack speed and occasionally get burned because of it. But, all in all, the defense is WAY better. The fact that you can pick out specific things to gripe about is a step in the right direction.

On the zone blitz thing. I hate it and always will, but every team in the country runs it now.

The censorship from the mods on my thread title is disappointing (I am disappoint.).

There is nothing offensive about Top Button Jones's new nickname and it is meant in good fun, not mean spirited.

5 games in, what have yall seen philosophically that you either are excited about or has you scratching your head?

1. Color me not excited with the idea that for the next four seasons we are going to have to watch our RBs try to turn the corner on an outside sweep play 25 times a game. This. Will. Not. Ever. Work. Against. SEC. Teams.

I'm sure it was great for him in the big east, but there is too much speed to ever consistently turn the corner in this league. The sooner TBJ gets this through his Spike's Dad from Little Giants haircut head the better.

With the RBs and OLine we have on this roster, it is nonsensical that we do not try to pound the ball up the middle. Top Button Jones et al (his staff) are clearly not willing to adjust their Big East system to the SEC game.

2. Why the heck are we running zone blitzes that require DEs like Jordan Williams to drop into coverage!? This team doesn't even have linebackers that can maintain man coverage on rbs/TEs, so why in the world would Top Button Jones et al run a zone blitz scheme that pits a 5.0 Forty DE against a RB!? This isn't the NFL and it sure as spit isn't an NFL roster. Get back to basics! Stop trying to be cute with exotic blitz schemes, for this is a big reason why we are giving up big plays...we get ourselves in situations where a huge mismatch is blatantly obvious to the opposing QB.

I've seen nothing through 5 games, philosophically speaking, that makes me think that even with quality talent back on the Hill we would be in any different position than we are now. Someone in another thread mentioned that the similarities they see with Top Button Jones are that of when Rich Rod went to Michigan and refused to adjust his system to the tougher league/competition level and his roster.... I fear TBJ may be the poor man's version of the same thing.

You have to play with the talent on the team nd you have to mix it up sometime. If you arm chair coaches are so damn good, why are you not coaching in the NFL? Get off the coaches backs, at least until we have SEC level players with at least some experience
