This again!?????? Let me ask u this if u knew as a coach u could win 6 or 7 games if u modified your system or u could run your system n not win but 4 or 5.. which should you do or should do because u r hired to win n win as often as possible..

All system work with a cam or tebow but how many r winning championships consistently in the sec with a spread n avg qb play??? Miss state??? Ole miss???

He will get 3 years but the fans won't be aaround if his first two seasons r less than 6 wins n that's just reality

Are you not capable of typing? Reading your posts is like trying to read a copy of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I can't tell what the heck you're trying to say unless I sound it out. And honestly, it's not worth it.

This is no different that Rich Rod showing up in Michigan years ago. Everyone knew they were going to suck offensively that first year....it is still beyond my comprehension that a Gatorade Player of the Year in SC cannot complete a 5 yard out/curl/slant with any consistency.

This miffs me too.

I'm sure they are out there, but that's really all I could find on youtube. A less mobile quarterback by the name Collaros (sp?) did pretty well.

I couldnt remember his name. Didnt mean to sound snotty... I just feel we should go with that gameplan. They went away from alot of play action. Using play action on short passes kill the quick read from the line of scrimmage. Great job breaking.it down.

I didn't think you sound snotty. This offense allows for the quarterback to sling it. We just need a better slinger :)

When will people realize we don't have a QB to run any style or game plan unless it's a style that hands it off 97% of the time.

I honestly don't know. I think it's all speculation at this point, but it could be that they simply are not ready. Whether it's a lack of grasping the playbook, strength, or mental. One of these two will be our starters in the coming year and he doesn't want to ruin them.

I know our QB play has been abysmal, but only the coaching staff can give a definitive reason. Trust me, I feel the pain. I think a good QB could have possibly won the Florida game for us.

I went back and watched the entire game again. I honestly don't think worley is the problem. Granted he isn't Peyton by any stretch but on the really noticible plays that we had incompletions and Interceptions it appeared that Marquez turned the wrong way or didn't get out of his break soon enough and the ball had already been thrown. On the interception at the goal line when he was throwing to Pig after he shifted you can blatently see that pig took the play off jogging the first couple of steps. Go back and watch. In addition to that Worley had to get rid of the ball quick due to pressure and I honestly can't understand why it was getting to him so fast because the O-line shouldn't be that bad. I think they just aren't there as a team yet. It is what it is but it certainly isn't all Worley's fault and if you think it is just go back and look on your DVR and rewind those plays a couple of times and you will see too.

oh and I forgot to mention the crossing route interception. Our receivers blocked themselves. They literally ran into each other and threw off the route. I didn't notice that live but it happened.

Thanks TNV. You hit on a lot of what I've been saying in regard to our receivers and I appreciate the specific examples. Those guys are a mess and it's really unfortunate. They are all very talented but shouldn't be forced into the position of having to start as freshmen.

Excellent post JAEvans. I've been trying to say basically the same things to "fans" around here that are ready to fire CBJ already. I keep hearing the same argument about changing the system to fit the players...heck from the play of Worley so far, what system could he possibly be good in?! I want to win and I'm tired of waiting for "next year" as much as the next guy, but if people will back up from the ledge and let him get some athletes in here, like the class that should sign for '14, this system will work. Im glad he's choosing not to change for 1 year, as this only puts us behind again next season. I wake up every saturday, as i have for years, thinking we'll win every game...but in all honesty we're 3-2 as expected. Things will get better and the Vols will be back. I'm just gonna keep on cheering and watch as the magic happens.

Go Vols

Nice job JAEvans! It's refreshing to see a well thought out and intelligent post from someone. Too many people on here just don't understand football or everything that goes into implementing a new system. After skimming through all the "fire CBJ" ignorance, this was definitely needed.

It's no secret that most of VolNation is not enamored with the play calling and lack of variety thus far. We have many upset that we are running the seemingly same plays; others are unhappy with not throwing more.

Let Coach Boone's wisdom, from 'Remember the Titans' sink in here: "It's like Novacaine, just give it time it always works."

Another problem that many of us have is accepting the implementation of an entirely new style of offense - the spread option/zone run scheme. For years, Tennessee has been an avid 'Pro Style' offense (still my favorite), but CBJ and staff have a different philosophy. Their philosophy hinges on the spread read option.

Here is one of the great offensive college minds explaining.

I'm not knocking Worley, but he isn't even doing the pro style well. With that said, he never was recruited to run a read option style offense.

_______________________________________________

I'm not going to go all E-Coach, but I have spent the past two hours watching old film from Butch's offense at Cincinnati in 2011 and 2012. The defense acts completely different than the defenses we are seeing this year. Worley has only kept the ball five times in five games. The defensive end always crashes down on the RB, essentially negating the 'QB Blocking Defender' advantage this offense creates.

Rest assured ladies and gents that Butch has more run plays. He has the dart, outside zone, inside zone, counter, zone trap and more. Butch has said time and time again that he will only run the plays after the offense fully grasps it. The defense doesn't always have to be fooled. Real football offenses simply smash the defensive line and get 4 yards or more. If we can't do that than why should we turn to more complicated zone runs.

_______________________________

I would like to address a fallacious knock on this style offense. That knock being that this offense will not work against the SEC due to speed. It's true that SEC has the fastest players in the country and the concern is a legitimate one. That's the beauty of this offense. Most of these runs are off tackle, unless the QB keeps it. Furthermore, many teams run this in the SEC: Florida, TAMU, South Carolina, Auburn and more. Other very good teams around the country that run it and run it effectively: Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan, etc.

I wanted to post more and explain the dart play (a staple for the explosive Clemson offense), the read option style of Oregon (another explosive offense), and Urban Meyers power read option in Ohio State that Braxton Miller kills it with.

We will get it. Butch Jones is 3-2 as expected. We have, what many analysts say is the hardest schedule in the history of college football. Our team will be exposed, but Butch is plain and simple a winner. I think the man deserves a little more patience and respect.

I'm not okay with mediocrity at Tennessee - but the fact is plain and simple that it will take time. Let him coach. Everyone clamored for Peterman and look what happened. Butch wants to keep the redshirts on these young freshmen and I'm sure he has a dang good reason to do it. Worley simply is not very good and it's at the most important position. This year will be tough, but allow him to recruit players and develop the young talent we have.

Lastly, I know we've had some bad coaches recently, but I truly think Butch is a winner. Kiffin and Dooley were failed experiments but Butch has tasted championships and developed Big East (and MAC) players into NFL caliber players. Imagine what he can do here at THE University of Tennessee with time, support, and the resources that our great school afford.

Thank you JAEvans - these are the nuggets I come to FF to find! GBO!!!

I think we would have much more success in running a west coast style offense. Of course thats a fairly complicated system to learn but it has a lot of benefits. It can stretch out a defense and open up lanes for big runs and passes. i think with our receivers, we should get the ball into their hands quick and let them go. The read option is really only successful with QB's who are studs with great running ability. Tebow, Newton, Mariota, Miller these guys are studs.

Look at Alabama, now I know we have nowhere near their talent but they don't run a read option style offense. Neither does UGA or LSU. These teams just give the ball to their backs and let them go. I just think the read option is bad unless we get the right people. Until we do, we should be running a more west coast style. It still provides a higher probability for completions, especially for a QB who cannot really get the ball down the field.

Honest question. Not trying to be a smartass but do you believe we have more talent than South Alabama ?

Yeah in certain areas, but not in the Qb area and Tight end area and corner back area!!! But yeah overall we have a better group of athletes but the lack of depth is really showing up, we have some great players and some really great young talent.. But just because they have the power "T" on the side of the helmet does not make them an awesome player, give it a couple of recruiting classes to get what we need!!! DD and company really dropped the ball the last few years in recruiting and it is really showing on Saturday afternoons...

Great post. Butch's offense will work but its not like flipping on a light switch. 5 games in isn't enough time. As bad as it sucks for fans to suffer through some of this imagine how the team feels. Taking some lumps now will pay off in future seasons.
