I can't access the link. Let me know who it is and I'll tell you what I think.

Thanks

Class of 2004 (scout.com)

A.J. Ratliff- 4 star
Josh Smith- 5 star (opted for NBA)
D.J. White- 5 star
James Hardy- 4 star
Robert Vaden- 4 star
Robert Rothbart- 3 star

The talent was there, it was just the developing of the talent that didn't happen with Davis.

It was pretty well known that Conley's dad was not a Davis fan AT ALL. And Oden wanted to go where Conley just as bad as the opposite. Since IU wasn't on Conley's list it wasn't going to get serious consideration from Oden.
Mike Conley, Sr. is a preening, prima donna jackass. He's not a fan of anyone but himself.

Thanks. Here's the problem though. Josh Smith was a hoax to help Davis being on the Hot Seat. He was always going to the NBA and only signed with IU to help Davis. Hardy wasn't worthy of the 4 star ranking and only played a total of about 10 minutes the ONE season that he played. (He has turned out to be a pretty good reciever though). White I already mentioned was a family connection from Davis' days in Alabama. I worked the Allan Henderson basketball camp when DJ visited to speak and he told us he always dreamed of playing for Duke or UNC and had the chance but felt the need to go to IU for Davis. Vaden good recruit and definitely worth the 4 star rating. Ratliff on the other hand should have been a 3 star. Robert Rothbart I have to be honest that I've never heard of him and I know that he never played a minute of IU basketball.

I do agree with you that his coaching was the main problem but for a guy who was supposed to be a great recruiter he highly disappointed.

No kidding? I did not know that about him. What do you base that off of?
I'm not going to name drop, but through various associations, I've gotten to know a fair number of big time D-I coaches. I know of at least two who didn't make an effort at recruiting Oden/Conley. Their reasoning was that Oden would only be there one year and they didn't think that was worth the headache of having to deal with Conley, Sr for four.

Interesting...thanks for the info.

Oden for one year might turn into two due to his wrist injury. All signs point towards him returning in January however if there is a set back...who knows. It said on CNNSI that Oden went over the possibility of it with Matta.

I'm blanking here, who was the big guy that transferred to Indiana from Auburn? Is he still there?

Matt Painter will out recruit Sampson...IU landed a prize in "I can't make up my mind" Gordon but Painter will land better overall talent the next 5 years.

did someone seriously say they wanted to play north carolina?

we don't want north carolina.

how would you not want to play a team like carolina? no better way to measure your team and no better way to show your team where you need to be.

i agree, if this were midseason, but we have a young team who needs to build confidence. i am just very afraid north carolina would wipe the floor with us

if that's what you think will happen you still want to play early in the year to give the team something to fight to get to come march. Under your philosophy, you don't want carolina to wipe the floor w/ you midseason and lose everything.

but you don't lose everything, these are guys that need to learn how to win at the collegiate level early, because they will be a big part of our team this season. i don't want them to get creamed and then turn around and have to play the likes of ohio st. and texas. we have a rather rough non conference schedule even without north carolina.

yes, but i wouldnt expect to come out and shoot 50% from 3 and have a +12 turnover margin against north carolina either.

i'm not saying we can't win the game guys, i'm just saying, we could conceivably play north carolina, texas, memphis, and ohio st. not to mention a pretty good murray st. team, and then our sec schedule. it's going to be hard to get to the tourney even without playing said game against north carolina.

Yes, but that is no reason to not want to play North Carolina. Last year, people thought we would get blown out by Texas, Memphis, and Florida at least once. We only lost one of those games, and it was a close one at Memphis. Therre are quite a few similarities between us and North Carolina. We are both very, very young. We both play a very fast, up-tempo pace.

I'm not saying we will win, but we can. But even if we come out and lose by 20, it will be a great learning experience for our players. North Carolina is a team that talent wise, I can see us becomming in the future. It will be a great measure to see how far we've come, and how far we still have to go. It also give our freshmen some much needed big game experence for the SEC slate coming up.

i will hold to the thought that they will get all the big game experience they need, even without north carolina. that said, if we do play north carolina, i hope i am wrong and we take it to them.

Murray State isn't nearly as strong as usual this year. New coach, new faces. We'll roll them.

Well if your going to play UNC now would be the time. They aren't clicking yet and if UT gets a win like that it looks good on the resume come March.
