This is like arresting someone because the law for getting married on a Tuesday at 8 o'clock is still on the books.

no not really, because had it been the first touchdown of the game, it would have still been called and it wouldn't have been a big deal

thats not why they lost like espn acted. Washington didnt have to go and let them block the kick

Yes really, it is a stupid rule and any official with half a brain uses some discretion. There was nothing worthy of calling in that celebration.

until the rule book changes, it should be called. I agree it's a BS rule, but as a ref what are you suppose to do? If you call it you have fans hating you and if you don't call those penalties, then you have your boss on your ass

As I said, it is the equivalent of arresting someone for some non-sensical law about kissing in public.

here's the rule for you guys...
2. After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately
must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot.
This prohibits:
(a) Kicking, throwing, spinning or carrying (including off of the
field) the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it.
(b) Spiking the ball to the ground [Exception: A forward pass to
conserve time (Rule 7-3-2-d)].
(c) Throwing the ball high into the air.
(d) Any other unsportsmanlike act or actions that delay the game

It was a toss over the shoulder...only it was a bit high lol.
Everybody is going off on the ref that flagged that play, but if you watch the replay, you are right. He didn't just flip the ball over his shoulder. That ball was in the air for awhile. If spiking the ball is a penalty, that clearly warranted a flag as well.

...and the idea that it cost them the game is just plain stupid. A FG block from 35 would have been a block from 20 as well. It's not like the kicker would have hit it any differently.

Where does "d" make any mention of the ball?

my bad, misread it. but they start the play clock after a td, so I see it hard being a delay of game call if they're just high fiving each other. but if they're dog piling the guy who scored the TD, then I understand

That happens a ton, sometimes called sometimes it is not.

.

Exactly. Before I had seen it on ESPN, I thought the TD was game winning and they called it back resulting in UW not being able to score again.

That is why I think the whole thing is a farce. You leave an incredibly important play up to the whim of some official. They are all going to have different views of what is "excessive" and so forth.

I just saw the play on a wide angle replay. That type of celebration is going to get flagged every single time. He threw that ball 30 feet into the air.

It might be the "right" call, but I don't think it should be called in the closing minutes of a tight game.
