How is it different than paying a first round draft pick guaranteed money in the NFL?
First round draft picks have 3 or 4 years of film for NFL teams to evaluate. They're not stupid. Yes, some 1st rounders don't pan out just like some 5*'s don't pan out. Bottom line is that people that have too much money will do stupid things with their money :cool::cool::cool:

I think it's stupid to pay these guys this money but the worth if something is whatever someone us willing to pay for it. Also, keep in mind this isn't guaranteed money. It will be based on obligations being met. I have an idea that these contracts are best case scenario over 4 years. Just like with Nico, he'll likely never get $8mil reported, he'll be gone after 3 years anyway if he's that good.

Sounds like they’ve reached the “we didn’t want him anyway” stage of grieving.
Steps of grieving often include: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance.

If we're in denial still then get the popcorn ready. I'm a bit looking forward to watching the meltdown if this turns into a decade long stink fest by Florida.

Are you really this bad at reading comprehension? Where in the post did I place blame on anyone? I simply questioned the sanity of offering a kid that's never taken a snap in college that kind of money. I seriously doubt wherever his next stop is, he gets anywhere close to that. Trying reading slower next time. Take it all in.
It's certainly insane. Huge financial risk. Then again this entire world has gone bat chit crazy so....

I respectfully disagree.
These aren't professional athletes, so they shouldn't be treated as such. A vast majority of students athletes are given scholarships that pay for tuition, books, meals, and any additional fees the college adds to their bill. Lots of these schloarships are paid at 100%, so no debt after college. Not to mention weight and strength training, nutrition plan, team Physician's, better amenities, and "perks" from local establishments. None of this is given to those non-student athletes. What money, if any, the institution might make from a students 'name, image, & likeness', likely meant the athlete was destined for the pros. They will then be rewarded monetarily at that time for their ability. Not sure how much money the school made on "NIL" of a 3rd - 4th string player, but that player still enjoyed the perks of the "star" athlete. No more going to a school where my grandparents, parents, or favorite player went because of love for that school, it is now about making a business decision for some of these 17-18 year old kids. Running onto a field, court, or track should mean something because you grew up following/loving that team, not because they bought you to do it. With this, the passion leaves because the player gets paid, win or lose. I understand we are now in a different era, but I completely disagree with paying HS/college kids to play a game. $100k education for free should be enough.
JMO

These Schools have made Billions off these players. The athletes should be able to make as much as someone is willing to pay. That's what is so great about the country we live in, you know the LAND OF OPPORTUNITIES! If someone put a cap on what you were allowed to earn you would you would want MORE. That's what this whole place was built around.

In all honesty the world thought Spyre was nuts to give Nico $8. He hasnt played a down.

Rules exist to level playing field. WW West approach isnt exactly the best.

I don't think Nico has been paid anything over that "signing bonus". I think that $8M is based on certain obligations. I doubt he ever reaches that $8M. JMO

That said. I hope Florida keeps *****ing the bed, in front of the entire World. Really warms my Orange heart

Having suffered through our own pooing of the bed for over 15 years, I almost feel bad at taking so much joy in watching other fan bases suffer too.

Almost.

Those obligations can only be tied to making appearances at events and doing advertisements(social media stuff) and what not. They can't be based on football related performance. So, as long as he fulfills those obligations, he will get his money every year.

Yeah, kinda what I was getting at. He may not be able to do every single event based on his schedule. Plus, if it's a 4 year deal I don't think he's here for that last year. I think the contract amount is probably a best case scenario.

I hope so too. Despise everything about UF. From their sh!tty fans doing the annoying gator chomp, to all the incredible luck they have had over the Vols through the years, I hate them through and through.

This incident couldn't have been more public with the advent of social media. This is a terrible look for them.

Napier or Florida ain’t paying him. It seems to be a disconnect between UF’s collective(s) and the recruiting department.

As for the wider NIL debate, the idea that money will ruin the sport may have a little validity but in my view is mostly archaic thinking. The transfer portal is doing as much to that end as anything.

We simply couldn’t continue the wink wink under the table payments of a few grand. At least this way it’s somewhat transparent. These kids have the opportunity to make a little something, or a lot in some cases, to help their families rather than a bunch of suits getting rich on their hard work (regardless of what’s put into the classroom being a college athlete is hard work), and then lecturing them on how lucky they are to be getting free education. Yuck.

I also believe NIL contains a sort of cycle of self-motivators. The more you stand out on the field, the more you work to be an impact player, the higher your earning potential becomes. I don’t necessarily buy the argument that teams can buy championships, or at least that they can any easier than before. Didn’t we just watch TCU play for a natty?

The collectives are a good way to get this done, and auspiciously for us Tennessee has been a pioneer school in this arena. The NIL era and Josh Heupel both arriving at the same time has been a perfect storm for us and our success.

This way, those that want to contribute to Spyre and the like can, and those that don’t can sit back and pine for the good old days. Is it fair to hard working students in their respective fields of study? Maybe not. But these athletes are uniquely gifted. Something like 80,000 kids play NCAA football, and a fraction of that Division 1. Isn’t this the free market finally rewarding rare ability? Vestiges of unfortunate times are finally being corrected within the game. Hate to take it there but it needed to be said. NIL might not be the most efficient way to do it, a better way may come along soon. But for now I don’t mind it. And lucky for us Tennessee got out in front in a big way.
To almost add, there seemed to be less discipline issues because folks can lose real money now for dumb decisions

True. It can cut both ways. Money in a young man’s hands can lead to dangerous outcomes, but many of these kids are likely becoming the main provider for their immediate families when they arrive, and that can lead one to mature very quickly.
