‘23 CA QB Nicholaus Iamaleava (Tennessee)

He was #31 overall recruit in the country and #3 QB. He started it all at Clemson…….

Edit……Boyd started what we know Clemson today. I remember 1981
Yes much like Hooker could do here. But Boyd isn't a generational qb regardless of his rankings. Watson and Lawrence are all time qbs and both are or were franchise qbs in the NFL.

We do not get Manning if we did not have Shuler.
Clemson does not get Watson & Lawrence if they did not have Boyd.
Manning came here because his brother broke his leg. Not sure what happened with Ole Miss but it was enough to turn Archie and Cooper off to them for a while.

David Cutcliffe and Phillip Fulmer recruited Peyton. I dont think it had anything to do with Brandon or Heath.

edit: was a congenital issue... not broken leg.

It looked like a family enjoying a vacation. Fong has been wrong before but, that was quick...only 6 confidence.4EAA15A7-2113-466C-88A0-F752FE200892.png

Yeah not to mention that was before the UT visit with his entire family. I truly believe he will commit to the good guys when it’s all said and done.

Agree......but without Boyd, and how he did help jump start Clemson, they don't get Watson or Lawrence. We don't know if Nico is generational yet. He could be.

I believe Cooper Manning had to quit football because a digenerative back issue. Peyton wanted to play with his brother. That opened the option to go elsewhere. Cutcliffe's development of Shuler was instrumental in the recruitment of Peyton. In my opinion, if Shuler had not taken the chance on Cutcliffe and Fulmer, Peyton might have selected otherwise. Maybe a perfect storm. Hoping for another.

i believe Ole Miss was also either about to, or was just coming off some NCAA sanctions, and they just weren't very good.
Cooper had the neck issue that forced him to retire from the sport, so that nixed any chance of he and Peyton playing together, so that was strike two against Ole Miss.

as for TN, it was absolutely due to the run of QB's we had, both Andy Kelly and Heath Shuler lit it up here, and proved you could run any type of offense here. plus we were on the way up as a program, we were recruiting good/great O linemen, RB's and at the time, were WR U.

everybody wanted Peyton, i remember hearing stories about how Spurrier rolled out the red carpet for him at FL.

anyway, while Ole Miss was factor, i don't remember it being a sure thing, either way. Peyton had more options than either of his brothers. and i don't think Eli goes there if Cut isn't the coach. maybe some stars aligned in getting Peyton, but i don't think it was only because of that. there was plenty to sell here at the time. he was the guy that was going to take it to another level, and for the most part, did.

I agree with Brent. Without Shuler showing the possibilities a top tier QB could accomplish in the offense, Peyton most likely goes Florida or Michigan.

We do not get Peyton if Archie did not have a friendly relationship with Bobby Scott, his teammate in New Orleans.

you're correct. still think had it not been for Fulmer and Cut he wouldve gone to UF. Not sure about Heath.

Peyton’s had a process since high school. He weighs everything in making his decisions. We saw it after he had to reinvent after Indianapolis. How much his dad liked a former teammate and how much he likes a coach are minor to more relevant bullet points like history of success and organizational track record. He chose the Broncos because of John Elway. I’m a fan of what Jeff Francis and Andy Kelly did in Knoxville, but it doesn’t land Peyton Manning.

It's all in The Book of Manning.

Cooper was diagnosed with a degenerative back issue and had to give up football.
Ole Miss was about to go on probation after the Billy Brewer era.
Vols don't get Peyton without Cut.

2. After his Tennessee visit, the Vols have a slight edge in Nico Iamaleava's recruitment.

Gorney’s take: FACT. I’ll say this - more visits will happen and things could definitely change because Alabama and Georgia will be contenders in the SEC, Oregon is going to play a major role here and others could slide in the mix, too. But the Tennessee visit was huge for
Nico Iamaleava
as comfort, play style and love from the fan base and coaching staff are going to be factors he considers along with NIL potential. I’ve been told by numerous people now that playing in the SEC is a major draw but I think the Ducks are also very much in this because of the Nike considerations. We will see. Tennessee absolutely did everything possible to convince Iamaleava it was the right spot. I’ll give the Vols the slightest edge right now with the caveat more trips could sway his opinion.

Price’s take: FICTION. It’s not that I think Tennessee is in bad shape because I think they are in as good of a position as they could be in leaving the weekend. I just know with more trips to come including a return trip to Knoxville in April, Iamaleava and his recruitment will have plenty of marinating left to do. For the last several months people around Nico have told me they prefer to play in the SEC. That message hasn’t changed and thus Tennessee has that feather in its cap. When you spend three-plus days in Knoxville, it screams Tennessee is a real threat to land Nico.
- TOS

Price says FICTION and then spends the entire rest of the post explaining why Tennessee DOES in fact seem to have an edge right now. He points out, as common sense would dictate, that nothing is even close to a done deal. But the question was not whether it was a done deal. Just if UT had a slight edge right now.
