Cal, Auburn, and Vols all in NIT?

There have only been 2 teams out of 160 in the last 5 years get into the NIT Tournament as at large bids with less than 17 wins. 13 of the teams last year were from major conferences to include Arkansas (21-11), Georgia (19-13), LSU (19-13), and Missouri (22-11) from the SEC.
Texas A & M did not get in with an 18-16 record.

When did they start allowing teams with losing records to participate? If it's a new rule then the last five year comparison isn't valid.

Wikipedia can be your friend if used correctly. Ha ha. He just seems so adamant that it CAN'T happen, when it actually can.

I use it all the time. I was thinking that that criteria had just changed.

It all comes down to what everybody else does. If there are a lot of teams at the top with few losses, then there are more teams hovering around .500 or worse.

I still think that TN could be the first sub .500 to get in, but I don't know if we want that notoriety (unless they were to win it also).

OK, let's analyze this data. Tennessee has 14 wins. Texas A&M was not good enough to get in last year with 18 wins. They were the 8th place team in the SEC. I think with our strength of schedule we would get in with 17 but that is by no means a guarantee. There is no way we get in with only 16 wins whether we have a winning record or not. that means we have to win at least 3 more games to make the NIT field and maybe 4.

It's too early to know. The records of power conference teams that miss the NCAAT and how conference tournaments shake out will determine it instead of TN's win total alone. Last year isn't relevant.

I'd like to see Donnie turn down a nit invitation. If Tennessee wants to set a winning bar they should only play in the only post season tourney that means anything at all. Teams don't play hard or care about winning the Nit. Ask any player who's ever played in it. Jordan McRae was on record saying they wanted to lose to mtsu in the first round so they could be done with the ****. Set your programs bar high. My opinion.

Sort of like the football team playing in the Sugar Bowl instead of the 4 team playoff for the national championship. From your logic the football team should decline a bowl bid.

So according to your rationale UT should have turned down the Taxslayer Bowl this year if that had been an option. Ridiculous...post season of the NIT variety provides extra practice and more experience in a tournament type environment. It is all we have left to play for...lets try to get in and win the damn thing...ok?

Ask the players at ut if they care one bit about playing in the nit. I go to ut and knew a few old players from cuonzo and current players now all say they'd rather not play in the nit if they miss the big dance. Practice time and extra games don't matter if the guys aren't invested in the game. The last time we made the nit our team didn't want to even win the game. They are very open about not wanting to play in meaningless games with no fans there.

I thought i read somewhere that NIT bids can no longer be turned down. I'll check with my friend Wikipedia.

Football is different, our team goal was to make a bowl game. As a ut fan that kind of mindset makes me sick but it is what it is and that's where our program is right now but brighter days are surely coming. Our basketball team doesn't have a goal to make the nit. Who would wanna play in the loser tournament? Lol

Kuonzo lost another yesterday , so the dream matchup in the NIT is looking more possible

I was wondering if they could. With money incentives and what not. I feel like Kentucky turned it down not to long ago but they may have just been considering that. Idk for sure but that's just my opinion. All it can do is get somebody hurt. If the players actually wanted to play and use the games to get better id be all for it but I've heard from every ut basketball player I've spoke with in
My 4 years of school that they all would rather just not play. That's the truth. Fans don't like to hear that tho.

With so many inexperienced players on the roster they need to play every game that they can. This isn't the same thing as for example a team that was expected to make the Sweet 16 before the season then missing the NCAAT.

Also, the bowl comparison is valid. Around 50% of football teams go to bowls while only about a third of basketball teams go to the NCAAT and NIT.

I agree being a young team in a new system they need a lot of games and reps but do you think it's a good idea if not one player on the team is interested or cares about winning a game in the nit?

Not saying I'm right. Just wondering what other people think. Cause if you let the team pick they'd be unanimous in not playing.

There were 80 teams in bowl games. There are 100 in the
two major post season basketball tournaments. Same difference. The reason they don't want t0 play at TBA is because 4000 fans show up and embaras them in front of the team they are playing and on national tv. ESPN televises all the games. If they knew 15000 fans would show it would be quite different.

You have no idea if that's true or not.

Plus this team is different than say Martin's first 2 teams. If they were on the NCAAT bubble and didn't make it, then yes they would be let down and probably wouldn't care about the NIT.

But this team is young and wasn't expected to finish over .500. Plus I would bet money that Richardson would love to put the uniform on a few more times.

Do people like you think it's a coincidence the sec looks lackluster and loses a lot of bcs bowl games that don't matter? But the sec always seems to win the opening games of the year against the same caliber non conference big boys. Fans don't understand that bowl games and nit games are meaningless to the players. Naive fans are most of them.

I think you're right, but I may be mixing it up with bowl games. I know SEC teams can't turn down bowl games.

I actually haven't found it. Maybe teams can decline. Especially if the tournament can't promise that the finances are net positive.

Realistically, if a team didn't want to go it should just take a simple phone call to the organizers to make that happen.

Take my word or not. When jmac and maymon were here they both were open on campus about being happy mtsu won the nit game so they could not have to play in that anymore. I'm not gonna put anybody's name on our current team out there but I've been told straight from their mouth in class that they are gonna be sick if they get picked for the nit. If they don't make the tourney they truly would rather be done for the year. No debate at all.
