I refuse to get ribs outside of Memphis. Dead End's Burnt Ends are really tasty. I love getting their salad with the pulled pork, too.

What ribs do you like in Memphis?

I like Centrals. The location across the street from the MLK Museum.

It's average. Dead end BBQ is about the same imo. Both restaurants maryville locations are a step below the others imo

skip Calhouns and go to the Blackhorse Pub in Western Plaza, the food and beer are both better than Calhouns

Go to Hard Knox Pizza across the parking lot from Black Horse Pub. Buy you one of their superb pizzas, take pizza to Blackhorse, eat pizza and enjoy Blackhorse's beer selection and order one of their desserts.

Will that work vol in ar?

Best pizza in Ktown, imo.

Central and Commissary are my go-tos that aren't ones my dad's team smokes when they're "practicing" for Memphis in May. Central, IMO, is a little better. Commissary is closer to home when I'm home. But it's a good day whenever I find out that they had done practice ribs and shoulder earlier in the month. That means we're only a few hours away from Championship-quality. 2013 they finished 3rd in Ribs.

Central and BBQ Shop are my two favorite places for ribs. The Commissary is tied with Central for my favorite place. But there's not really any bad BBQ places in Memphis. Corkys and Rendezvous are the worst, but for some, it's the best BBQ they've ever eaten.

With beef prices still high I think alot of restaurants are using a cheaper cut, it seems like - they might think they are fooling customers when they are really only hurting themselves

I'm telling you, sweet ps is pretty damn good. I've had ribs there just as good as Memphis

Being fair, I'm not sure how much of that was an aberration lol. They've only finished Top-20 once, and it was that year. But that year they CRUSHED it. The struggle, I've learned, is less making incredible ribs and more making incredible ribs that are still succulent and delicious for the blind tasting that you can't pull right out of the smoker and feed to the judge. When you've got to bring a to-go box and drop it off and pray that they're still as good as when you pull them out of the smoker...that's the terrifying part.

I am sure the team has to be extremely nervous waiting on the judges decision.

Hey if they can ever place in the top 20 in any division at Memphis in May, they definitely know how to make sone good bbq.

Do they do a lot of travelling and enter into several competitions per year ?

I never made it to Memphis in May. The best competition I have been to was the Jack Daniels World Championship in Lynchburg. They had some great bbq. Johnny Majors was one of the judges. Great guy, he was just roaming around talking to basically anyone that spoke to him.

Well that sucks. The Old Mill, The Apple Barn, and Pancake Pantry are our staples when we go.

I like the Apple Barn better than the Old Mill. It has been very good every time we have been there. I am not a big fan of the Old Mill, I know I am in the minority. Haven't been to either for a few years.
