Cal finished the 2005 regular season with a 6-4 record versus division IA opponents. 7 of 10 opponents were ranked lower than 50th in the last BCS rankings. They lost to UCLA (#16), Oregon State (#59), Oregon (#5), and USC (#1). They had no wins versus a team ranked higher than 50. Their Strength-Of-Schedule (SOS) was 90th.
Conversely, Tennessee's (SOS) was 12th. Only 5 of 11 opponents were ranked lower than 50th in the last BCS ranking. Losses were to #17 Florida, #7 Georgia, #13 Alabama, #30 South Carolina, and #6 Notre Dame... as well as the unfortunate loss to #65 Vanderbilt. The Vols did beat #12 LSU.
Tennessee was ranked #85 in passing offense in the NCAA in 2005.... Cal was ranked #90. Where Cal exceled was in the rushing game, where they ranked #9 at 235 yds per game rushing.
Cal had a pretty good defense, ranking #46. However, the Vols were exceptional with a ranking of #7.
There you go, those are the numbers IF Tennessee and Cal were to play last year in 2005. However, 2006 is a new year. The Vols have a new offense. Cal has a great rushing attack, but that falls into Chavis' strongest area, typically. I have no doubt the Vols' defense will again be good this season.
The key to this year's game will be how does Tennessee's offense rebound. The first place to start is Cutcliffe.
