In case you're not aware of the Golden Bears, first play, touchdown.

There's a newsflash . . . a Pac-10 team giving up a big play. Why would you expect a Pac-10 team to play defense in the Spring game? They don't do it any other time.

I'll say it one more time, if Tennessee can't win on its home field against Cal, it's going to be a long, long season.

Things started quickly with sophomore quarterback Nate Longshore connecting with sophomore receiver DeSean Jackson for a 70-yard touchdown on the first snap of the day.

Still... quarterback...connecting with reciever...70yard score...are words that I look forward to seeing again in stories regarding the UT offense.

Then you should get a checkup at the ole eye doctor.
Cal rates as one of those "tough test openers", not an 0-1 start game.

Cal is stepping it up this year and had one of the better springs they've had. They will be a tough team that could beat us, much better than a UAB like last year. They are on their way up, and if you remember we lost to Vandy and went 5-6 with a more talented team then we have this year.

You are not alone around here with your opinion of Cal. Or of UT for that matter.
As for me, when people start writing about the Cal defense, I'll worry a little more. Maybe.

It is spring ball and I seriously doubt that was first team D against first team O. If I recall we had a very similar pass from Ainge to Meach in the O&W game - oh how quickly we forget. Dows that mean we are going to be an offensive jaugernaut (sp?)?

I dont see why Cal is considered such a weak team, they have most of their starters back from a team that went 8-4 last year. We on the otherhand went 5-6, its a very even game.

I am not saying they are a weak team - I think they have the potential to be a 10 win team - just saying that you can't judge a team by the spring game much less one play. If we are going down that road then UF will be lucky to break 500 but i seriously doubt they will play that way come september.

We struggled against that highly touted D from UAB and it was a sign of things to come!! :disappointed:

Got me wondering. Does a first play touchdown mean that they have a Great Offense or does it mean they have a Terrible Defense????????

Given the History of the Pac-10, I suspect they have at least a Weak Defense!

GO VOLS, POUND THE ROCK AND RUN TO VISTORY!

All I can say is our d backs had better be ready. We have had tendencies in the past to play soft and give up the big play.

Cal finished the 2005 regular season with a 6-4 record versus division IA opponents. 7 of 10 opponents were ranked lower than 50th in the last BCS rankings. They lost to UCLA (#16), Oregon State (#59), Oregon (#5), and USC (#1). They had no wins versus a team ranked higher than 50. Their Strength-Of-Schedule (SOS) was 90th.

Conversely, Tennessee's (SOS) was 12th. Only 5 of 11 opponents were ranked lower than 50th in the last BCS ranking. Losses were to #17 Florida, #7 Georgia, #13 Alabama, #30 South Carolina, and #6 Notre Dame... as well as the unfortunate loss to #65 Vanderbilt. The Vols did beat #12 LSU.

Tennessee was ranked #85 in passing offense in the NCAA in 2005.... Cal was ranked #90. Where Cal exceled was in the rushing game, where they ranked #9 at 235 yds per game rushing.

Cal had a pretty good defense, ranking #46. However, the Vols were exceptional with a ranking of #7.

There you go, those are the numbers IF Tennessee and Cal were to play last year in 2005. However, 2006 is a new year. The Vols have a new offense. Cal has a great rushing attack, but that falls into Chavis' strongest area, typically. I have no doubt the Vols' defense will again be good this season.

The key to this year's game will be how does Tennessee's offense rebound. The first place to start is Cutcliffe.

I assume Cal must have the majority of their team from last year returning, and that is the reason for their vaulted rankings.

CAL wil be a tough team to open the season against. However, they have to travel clear across the country to a very hostile environment to face an SEC defense that is used to facing teams that like to pound the ball week in and week out. Lets face it Pac 10 defenses don't really add up to what they will see when they get to Knoxville. It will be the season opener, the atmosphere will be electric at Neyland. They will also be facing an offense that they won't really know how to prepare for. Sure they could go back and look at some film from Cut's former UT and Ol Miss days but I still think that UT will show them alot of formations and schemes that they haven't prepared for. I believe that Cutcliff learned some things from Charlie Weiss while he was in South Bend that will be beneficial for the vols as well. I think we all will be presently surprised this year by what we see from the Cal game to the end of the season. I think the team made some good strides in the right direction from last season over the course of spring practice and I suspect that it will continue on into fall practice. I doubt very seriously that we can win the National title this year but don't be surprised come November if we aren't "in the hunt" for the SEC East crown and possibly a birth in the SECCG. I believe things are starting to look up for the Big Orange.

Regardless, I think this is a make or break game for the big Orange

I like coming in under the radar. I like our defense in this one. I think we're faster and bigger up front that Cal. I think they will have trouble scoring. I think our defense will be the difference in this game, especially if we can run the ball and keep our defense rested. Vols 20 Cal 14

WHAT?"??? really? nobody here had any idea of that????

seriously though...Cal is a tough opener. That doesn't mean we shouldn't win. I agree that they could beat us, but that could be said about half our schedule.

That said, i think we could lose that game and still show improvement. For those of us that have been involved/watching football for many many years, you can tell whether or not a football team is any good or not, win or lose.

Of course, a win would go a long way....i'm not a fan of so called moral vicories, and in the end, an L is an L is an L, no matter how good you may look.

on the same token, while this first game does present it's own set of challenges, and i do think this is one of the most important season openers we've had in quite some time, winning this game would do wonders in the confidence dept. Losing it would maybe let some doubt linger, and that wouldn't be a good thing for this team, this year. I won't say losing that game means we're in for a long year, but it sure won't help...duh.

I don't buy that. It's just another tough game. It won't make or break anything IMO.

A loss to Cal would be more like a stubbed toe , not a break...painful but we would survive. That being said I think will we send the bears back to the west coast sucking orange.

I agree, i say if we win, we go 9-3 maybe 8-4 in the regular season, but if we lose i say its another 5-7 or 6-6 season

Honestly, I don't think it's possible for us to go 5-7 or 6-6.
