LA Fire Sounded Alarm On Budget Cuts Impacting Wildfire Response: Memo

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) chief warned a month ago that a near $18 million budget cut had plunged it into "unprecedented operational challenges" which would hamper its ability to respond to large-scale emergencies like wildfires.

LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley sounded off on the budget cuts in a Dec. 4 memo viewed by Fox News Digital where she foresaw what she described as the "cascading impacts" the cost-saving measures would have on the department.

The city slashed $17.6 million from the LAFD in its latest budget and the decision has come in for scathing criticism as several monster fires rip through the county with at least 10 people already announced dead from the disaster.

The budget measures were signed off by LA Mayor Karen Bass — whose leadership has also come in for scrutiny — and she has denied the cuts have hindered the city’s response. The cuts come into effect on July 1, 2024.

You are probably correct... brass is a copper / zinc alloy if I recall my metallurgy correctly so "pennies a pound" does seem low.
I don’t get the logistics of stealing the hydrant. Wouldn’t they have to close the main water source first? Or are they just leaving spewing water after taking them?

EXCLUSIVE: Leaked Memo reveals LA Mayor Karen Bass Demanded her Fire Department Cut an Extra $49 Million Just ONE WEEK Before Wildfires Broke Out

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass demanded her Fire Department make an extra $49 Million of budget cuts last week, a leaked memo revealed.

This cut is already on top of $17.6 Million of cuts in her latest budget.

The extra cuts, requested just days before fires broke out and devastated swathes of Los Angeles, would have shut down 16 fire stations and crippled the department's ability to respond to emergencies, sources said.

DailyMail.com interviewed current and former senior LAFD officers briefed on the shocking proposed cuts, and exclusively obtained the memo from an LA Fire Department (LAFD) whistleblower who posts on social media under the moniker 'LAFD Watchdog'.

Homeless man 'with blowtorch' in LA is tackled and zip-tied by furious locals as cops confirm latest wildfire is ARSON - while Khloe Kardashian leads anger at 'scum' Firebug

A homeless man allegedly trying to start a fire with a blowtorch was tackled and zip-tied by furious Los Angeles locals carrying out a citizen's arrest.

Locals claim the man was riding a bicycle around the Woodland Hills neighborhood on Thursday afternoon and carrying a large 'propane tank or a flamethrower'.

Community members claim they surrounded the man, brought him to the ground and detained him up with zip ties after they allegedly saw him trying to set fire to an object behind a vehicle.

One witness said the man was 'very focused on moving forward with the blow torch', telling FOX 11 the suspect said: 'I can't stop. I can't stop. I'm not putting this down. I'm doing this.'

Authorities have one suspect in custody who is believed to have intentionally started a fire, but have not confirmed the person's identity. It is currently unclear whether the man detained by Woodland Hills locals was found to have any connection to the wildfires or if he has been formally charged.

LAFD was just a week away from another yuge budget cut...

Collin Rugg
@CollinRugg

NEW: LA Mayor Karen Bass called for $49M in additional cuts to the fire department just *one week* before the LA fires which would have shut down 16 fire stations.

California: We deserve better leaders.

The revelation was made by the Daily Mail who obtained a leaked internal memo.

"The LAFD is still going through a [financial year] 2024/2025 $48.8million budget reduction exercise with the [City Attorney's Office]," the document read.

"The only way to provide a cost savings would be to close as many as 16 fire stations (not resources, fire stations); this equates to at least one fire station per City Council District."

Politics aside, there's no one else to blame for empty fire hydrants than gov't. That falls completely on gov't. LA is not even in a drought now. Gov't has got to see to it that the hydrants work. I would think lawsuits could come of this
Hopefully, new and better leadership for the people of California.
