To me, if there is a consistant drop off, then he should feel the heat. My main arguing point is that people are not factoring in the natural ebb and flow of college basketball and want to sharpen their sticks for a 21 win season that got us the East division and a spot in the SEC finals. UConn, Duke, Florida, Ohio State and others pay their coaches a ton of money and have the same ebb and flow issues. When did we get so arrogant?
I just don't know why it is necessary to anticipate the negative as opposed to anticipating the positive. The whole "if Pearl doesn't do this" philosophy. I haven't seen a UT coach recruit like this since O'Neill and I haven't seen the consistantcy of good results since, arguably, DeVoe. I certainly haven't seen the combination of the two in my lifetime in Knoxville.
So, saying that he's not making us into North Carolina or Kentucky is not really a good reason, to me, for Pearl to have any kind of job security issues. He starts giving us Vandy or South Carolina results, then yes.
Last year was Vandy or South Carolina like results. Being a bubble team that sneaks into the tournament as a 9 seed is not where I think this program needs to be with its facilities and fan base. I'm not saying it should be like UNC or UK either, but there is a lot of room between UNC's program and being a bubble team. We need to be somewhere in the middle where we aren't having to wonder if we're going to steal a spot in the 'AAs.
That's when the program will be where I want it to be. I thought we might have been there after the '07-'08 season, but last year we regressed back to being a bubble team.
