I've been watching Tim Banks field pretty good defenses since this staff arrived at Tennessee and all I've heard is gripping about how the Vols are #X in whatever meaningless defensive statistical category. Meanwhile, we just finished as a top 5 team and had our best season since I was a kid. Do you think our defense holding a top 10 program to 14 points had anything to do with that?
No. I'm still not buying.
1- you still have that USCe game and others where he was just outcoached. I'm not delusional. He doesn't have ideal talent. But there have been too many times when scheme or playcalling put the D in a position to fail. Too many times he seemed to get stuck in a rut.
2- Clemson couldn't finish and a lot of that was on them and their QB rather than UT being outstanding on D. They drove into UT territory on 6 of their first 7 drives. Banks had no solution. Great plays were followed by collapses giving up the advantage gained. Those missed FGs also changed the course of the game. Give the D credit for being tough in the scoring zone but that was not a dominant defensive performance.
3- The analytics sometimes cause coaches to lose. Between the fake and 3 missed FGs plus the 4th down UT stopped... you have 15 points. Clemson would have had 32 points.
4- I'm an equal opportunity knocker here. The D couldn't get off the field. The O couldn't stay on the field. That resulted in far too many opportunities for Clemson and too many plays for UT's D.
I am thrilled that UT won but there's a million reasons if you look at how the game played out... that UT should have lost.
That said, if they can turn Hadden's emotions back just one notch and give him someone on the other side... I think he can become a really good CB. Beasley showed signs he can become a dominant SEC LB. Slaughter is a guy who needs to be on the field. Not sure where. Maybe you just keep him in and rotate him through the other 5 positions but any time he's on the field WRs have to have one eye on him.
The DL probably had its best game of the year. They got pretty consistent pressure with 4. If there was one single factor that won the game for the Vols it would have to be the pressure they brought. They were able to do that while also holding Clemson under their rushing avg for the year and ypc.
IMHO, the pieces are there to become a very good D with just a few more guys. It has to be put together and coordinated well.
