Can we give Tim Banks credit now?

Banks deserves credit for last night just like he deserves criticism for Carolina. I’m still not blown away by Banks but maybe with some secondary talent we will see a much better team.

Coaches can only do so much.

Only Clemson’s first series, Tenn had them 3rd & 17, Vols got great pressure, CK threw it up and the Vols DB, there in good position, totally misjudged the ball & Clemson got a first down.

Tenn CBs got beat off the line a lot by Vlem WRs. They were chasing the WRs thus why they couldn’t get their head around. Every DB coaches teaches that but it doesn’t work if the WR has 2-3 steps on you.

If I remember correctly, Slaughter made an excellent play late in the game and had his head turned around and deflected the pass on a deep sideline route.

Textbook play!

He has had a very good season, I remember watching a porous poorly coached secondary allowing Florida and Alabama back into the games in Neyland that Tennessee should have won going away except for second half surges allowed and the worst loss in modern Tennessee history with a mediocre SC hanging 63 on his defense.

Clemson had a bad night on the scoreboard, a good night on offense, however, they did a lot to stop themselves along with outstanding plays from Young and Beasley.

After watching the entire 2022 yr, I have to give Banks credit. He adjusted to what he had and didn't have. He soon realized that he doesn't have a secondary thus he compensated with creative and effective blitzes. His defense did lay an egg at SC but all in all, I'd give him a B or a B+ for the year. He also recruited pretty well. That said, I do want to see some better coaching of the secondary. Giving huge cushions and not looking back for the ball doesn't look like coaching to me

Just going to say that Georgia fired Martinez bc he wasn’t good enough there. Now to be fair he had been promoted to retain him a few years before so I believe he was DC at the time.

Lol. Let me guess. Mid 40s suburban dad. Hate your life, hate your job, waiting on the kids to move out to get the divorce? Our defense had flashes. But don’t try to pump sunshine up my rear when we had to score 50 to win ball games. Our front was deceptively good. Our secondary was atrocious. I’m ecstatic with our season. The SC game is what it is. We honestly didn’t have the defense for playoffs anyway. I think some forget where we were from about 20-10 to 2020. I don’t. This year was a massive success. As for Milton, I was happy with his play last night. The arm talent has never been a question. However, I still question some decisions and reads under pressure. He was much improved last night. I’m not hoping for him to fail like some. Lighten up buttercup. It’ll be okay.
Actually went to Neyland 1st time in '74, retired. happily married, kids have moved on and have kids of their own. so I guess you pretty well nailed me. . So miserable I bucket listed going to every game this year. Next year back to my usual 2 or 3 and God willing a bowl game. Next year going to travel a little more, yeah, pretty miserable The only point I made that upset you was you being fixated on 1 game of a great season and telling you the Bucs might be a little more your speed. Don't brag about your hard times enduring 10 yrs of Vol misery, I remember a moving van being sent to Bill Battle's house. The only Buttercups here are the ones whining about 1 stupid game in an otherwise historic season. The staff did a pretty good job putting together the pieces to field a squad last year, built out of spare parts in the garage. Championship defense in 2 yrs, with the players we had, kinda wishful thinking, the staff probably fixed what they could to start winning. Enough about me, tell us about you, I hope you get over the instant gratification thing and learn Rome wasn't built in a day. Lets go to the airport, inrtend to ring in the New Year in good ole' TENNESSEE. Happy New Year to you Sir.

I've been watching Tim Banks field pretty good defenses since this staff arrived at Tennessee and all I've heard is gripping about how the Vols are #X in whatever meaningless defensive statistical category. Meanwhile, we just finished as a top 5 team and had our best season since I was a kid. Do you think our defense holding a top 10 program to 14 points had anything to do with that?
Our defense has been great at times but woeful others. We’ve not had a complete defensive meltdown outside of the SC game though, so that’s certainly an improvement over years past. That side of the ball needs the most improvement. If we don’t see it next year then we know it’s not just a personnel issue.

Were 11-2, can we improve? You bet we can, but our D front played tough most all year. Our secondary was our weak link. But even there at times we made plays. There is a small segment of this fan base that for whatever reason can’t address any positives but have no trouble pointing out a weakness. Our defense was not near as bad as some were making out. Especially up front, we have been pretty solid all year of getting pressure on the quarterback and stopping the run pretty well. If you do them things it makes the backend D’s job easier. Same with Milton we had a small segment of fans that weren’t very willing to give Milton any chance. They say things like he will never be good or your nuts to think he can ever be good.Sure any right minded fan knows Milton had and still has things to work on. But if them fans can’t see the strides he has made they never will. But it only proves Heupel and this staff know more about how to develop players and their abilities than folks on a message board too. And people that have eyes and a brain could tell that this game was important and it meant a lot. Yes, after hearing all the bemoaning of us playing a mighty Clemson and why we should just be happy and go play Tulane in Dallas this is a great day that us Vol fan should relish with pride!!!!! The Vols are back!!!! Better days are ahead!!!!! GBO!!!!! Great job D!!!! Way to go Joe!!!!! Great job staff! Great job Coach Banks!

Yeah it’s hilarious we are holding onto these two. Oh I forgot, you say recruits like Martinez so that means we should keep him. Never mind his terrible coaching ability. The most important thing is that recruits like him right?

Honest question. Who in the secondary looks better from last year?

It's funny that that's the only example you can give. Yes, that was a bad performance on both sides of the ball. Hooker was even bad that game. But the defense has given this team chances to win games and that's a big part of the reason that we're 11-2 right now.
Chavis gave up 59 to Florida in 1995 and later brought home a NC.

Let’s hear it then. Why is it that Garner can take lower ranked guys and coach them up? Why can Pope, Mack and Halze do it but Martinez can’t? So please lay it all out as to what I and many others don’t get.

DB is one of the hardest positions to coach in football.

Banks has done well with what talent he’s had to work with. We give up a lot of yards but the defense has made key stops in crucial moments. We need more depth at the LB position and in the secondary.

Heuepel won 11 games with a “terrible” defense as you call it.

I think his word is worth more than yours so there’s that.

Pruitt was supposed to be a Defensive genius and Bama is salivating to bring him back, but the Defense looked like hot slop and even worse, was boring under him. I say we ride with Banks 😂

you as well sir. Safe travels. Hope the airport is a better experience for you than it has been many lately. I do believe you misread my post. I am extremely happy with our season as a whole. I am just not ready to crown banks defensive coach of the year just yet. We had our struggles. I don’t believe any vol fan seeks instant gratification after our last 12 years. 3 wins to 11 wins in two years is plenty good for me. The bowl game was big for us. Milton improved, the defense showed up, young players showed development, and coach H once again showed us he’s the guy.

Game prep for Clemson was exceptional, and made the most of going against a freshman QB. But the D has been up and down all year. I think we don't know about Banks with the two classes he's had to play with, and Heupel has better insight than we do. Long-term I think giving offenses 100+ snaps will cost you games and that Heupel intends to see defense getting more stops on their side of the field.

Tim Banks should get credit for fielding a game plan to defeat Clemson but for most of the regular season his defensive secondary was……..lacking. I didn’t name his 3rd down defense “3rd and guaranteed” for nothing.
4th in the conference in 3rd down percentage.

No I don't. Clemson had a True FR QB that threw for 320 yards and went up and down the field on us. They just stalled out in the red zone, missed 3 FG's their kicker usually makes. If his son had tossed it on the fake FG they go up 7-0. Don't get me wrong, our D stepped up when they had but by no means did our secondary play well. Gave up a lot of passing yards and numerous PI's. We've gotta get our secondary fixed by next season. Plus Clemson has struggled offensively the last 2 years. Again I was really proud of our Defense for stepping up, but it wasn't because of the secondary. Our DLine gave their young QB fits.

I'll give Banks and the D credit for stopping Clemson at crucial times during last night's game, which ultimately contributed to the win but there were lots of mistakes made by the defense. I'll leave it up to CJH to decide if Banks needs to go or not. With an 11-2 record, I expect to see him stay though.

I admit I wasn’t big on him but after seeing the season play all the way out I have mad respect for him. Hard to have your defense back on the field every 2 minutes without them getting worn out . I tip my cap to Mr Banks. Well done sir.
