Can we trade punters?

Two shanks in game one does not bode well for the young man.
He seems scared , like the game is too fast for him. He had plenty of time and just created bad punts by rushing it and scrambling toward the sidelines. This is something that should have been seen in practice and resolved (or search for a new punter )

The punter runs sideways by default. He has 30 yards of free space in front of him and he still runs 20 yards sideways before he kicks it. Did they not see this in practice ?
Have you ever watched a rugby style punter (or in this case Australian Rules Football)? Our punter even did it a few times last year.

You're kicking the ball with your body half-turned to the right, which has to make it harder to get your foot solidly on the ball. That said, he's an Aussie whom I assume is used to kicking the ball Aussie rules style, which is the technique he seems to be using for us--but you wouldn't know it by the way he was shanking the ball today.
EVERY rugby style kicker does that. If you have ever watched Australian Rules Football, you will see that they are used to kicking off to the side while running full speed. They do all that while wearing zero padding.

What do they need to get down field for if you’re just going to kick it out of bounds 35 yards. He got a little better at the end but worse punting in Tennessee history.
It also throws off the rush to avoid getting blocked. Ideally some of them would've been better but they weren't all bad. I never said he was perfect. He's new to football and apparently coaches thought he was the best option.

Rugby punts are usually angled toward the sideline to prevent a return. He just angled some too much. The last one was a good punt though and most of the others were ok.

Plenty of punters run sideways before kicking. His problem is he is kicking it off the side of his foot.

You guys are judging him by what's seen in the first game when the game is never in doubt. We don't know what all is planned for him. What if he shanks a punt, but throws for touchdown on a fake punt. Stop this prejudgement until later in the season....
I hope I'm wrong. However I cannot help but think that wonky kicking style of his is going to bite us in the butt at some point in the season.

It could also be first game jitters. Maybe he just got some anxiety and thats why he didn't kick well.

I don't think rugby players play in front of as many people as we have at ball games.

I hate this punting philosophy... If we can't find something better than this we might be in trouble...I just don't understand who on the coaching staff thinks this is alright or the best way to punt the football

It prevents someone like Williams running it back 40-50 yards on you. Pick your poison.

For the record, he had punts of 17, 44 (touchback), 27, 41, 50 in that order.

So a punter that's new to the sport had 2 bad punts and 3 pretty good punts. Yes it will be a problem if he keeps shanking them. Him punting Rugby style doesn't make it bad.

Real Men of Genius.

Here's to you, Mr. Sideways Football Punter Guy...

You run 30 yards to one side to kick the ball 15 yards down field.
You run a 4.9 forty, and kick it 30.
You know less about Sine angles than Milli Vanilli knew about music.
And you blame your bad kicks on the Coriolis effect.

So here's to you, Mr. Sideways Football Punter Guy. Thanks to you, an entire generation of young football fans will learn how to kick a football...behind them.

Go Vols.
