I know it is not a popular opinion here.... but i understand why coaches pick who they do.... they are more comfortable with this person than they are with that person....
As examples, Pat in 1984 caught hell for naming 2 Lady Vols to Olympic team.... and those were the days before we got really big in the sport,.... before our very first championship....
And that same year.... Bobby Knight caught significant flack for who he named to the Olympic team... Charles Barkley was by most accounts the best forward in camp, but Knight didn't like him and he was not named to the team....
It happens. And it happens all the time
UConn fans hating Catchings as a person would be as ridiculous Tennessee fans hating Maya Moore as a person. There's absolutely nothing to hate because they are both humble, salt-of-the-earth human beings
Candace and Diana had a lot of similarities. Both of them knew they were good and had no problems making sure others were aware of it. Not at all a crime, but apparently Candace's cockiness was a character deficiency yet Taurasi's was something to be applauded. Yeah, no.
Haters? Yes I think you are right. But I have a problem with people who hate people they never met along with those who worship people they never met. And I don't applaud cockiness. I admire players for what they do on the court. When I watched Catchings play I saw someone who gave 100% all the time. That, along with her talent are what made me admire her. I admired Taurasi because of her style of play. She was always aware where all 10 players were on the court, got the ball to the open player and did it with flair. Another UConn opponent who I admired was Diggins, despite her white bandana and her swagger on the court, which drove me crazy She was UConn's nemesis but I admired her unrelenting hustle.
I suppose if Parker had played in Ct I would have admired her individual scoring skills and ignored her defensive lapses or her walking down the court at times. There certainly were UConn players who took plays off. Abrasimova comes to mind. But my feelings would stop short of admiration.
The exposure wasn't the same as it is today. EVERYONE knew CP3 was one of the top players not only in the league or country but WORLD!! Even though they won the gold medal I compare it to Coach K leaving someone like Durant or Lebron off the Olympic squad. Just because it happens al the time doesn't mean there isn't a hidden agenda behind it !
Difference in exposure doesn't make things right or wrong....
Coaches tend to choose who they are comfortable with... and whether Geno has a chip in his DNA to be anti Candace.... it was what it was...
My example still stands even though it is 33 yrs ago.... Good players who were vital parts of their NCAA champion teams like Cynthia Cooper of USC and Janice Lawrence and Jennifer White of La Tech had to make due with their NCAA titles as they were not chosen for 84 team... Lea Henry and Cindy Noble were chosen, and I do not think anyone begrudged Pat for those choices....
Yes, you keep hammering on that one example from 33 years ago. It is true you can't pick everyone and some good players are always not going to make the cut. But, Candace was a proven contributor to the team and was the only able and fit returner not selected. She was on everybody's list for being one of the top 5 players in the world and yes in today's athletic world, marketing matters and she was poised to be the face of Team USA.
So, I would submit that there are some differences between the 2016 scenario and the 1984 one.
I'll bet he Geno is too. Winning is the key and he escaped unscathed. Pity the poor future coach who loses in the Olympics.

Yes it was just to illustrate a point and cite example.... I respect everyone's opinion..... and i am fine with all of them
I don't think I said exposure made it right or wrong! I was making the point that exposure these days make it harder to hide a hidden agenda and keep someone of her caliber off of the Olympic team when she is one of the faces of women's basketball in the world (she is very popular overseas as well) ...and having a hidden agenda would be the wrong part but thanks for chiming in !
