The most epic film going weekend ever? or A Bad Idea??

Mystery Solved: 'Captain America 3' to Challenge Batman-Superman Head On (Exclusive)

Mystery Solved: 'Captain America 3' to Challenge Batman-Superman Head On (Exclusive)

Until now, the identity of the Marvel film set to open on May 6, 2016, has been kept secret; Marvel Studios and Disney claimed the date first before Warner Bros. slotted the next "Superman" installment for the same weekend.

The mystery has been solved -- the untitled Marvel Studios tentpole that Warner Bros.' Batman-Superman movie will go up against on May 6, 2016, is Captain America 3, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

That's the plan, anyway, creating the biggest superhero box office showdown in history (Marvel Studios and parent company Disney staked out the date first). Shooting schedules and post-production could always impact the current blueprint, however. Also, Marvel and Disney have a second untitled movie set to open that summer on July 8, so there is wiggle room.

Marvel films have all but owned the first weekend of summer for the past decade to enormous success, so all of Hollywood was surprised when Warner Bros. announced in January that it would open Batman-Superman movie on May 6, 2016 as well.

Batman-Superman stars Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill once again as Superman. It was originally supposed to hit theaters in summer 2015, but its release was pushed back nearly a year. There's no doubt but that Warners is hoping to replicate the blockbuster returns Marvel has enjoyed with its multi-hero Avengers universe.

EARLIER: Batman-Superman Movie Bumped to 2016, Setting Up Marvel Showdown

This week, when promoting the upcoming sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige threw down the gauntlet, saying he had no plans to move off of the May 6 date. He still wouldn't reveal the identity of the film; however, insiders confirm it will indeed be Captain America 3. The world premiere of Winter Soldier is Thursday in Hollywood.

Warners may have been waiting to see what the Marvel title was before considering a date change for Batman-Superman, if the studio indeed blinks. There are still weekends available that summer, including the first two after Captain America 3 and Batman-Superman are set to open. Zack Snyder begins shooting Batman-Superman in the coming weeks.

Veteran box office observers doubt that the two films will ultimately open opposite each other.

Marvel and Disney are incredibly high on Captain America 2, which opens in north America on April 4 and is garnering huge interest, according to pre-release tracking. They believe Winter Soldier, returning Chris Evans in the title role, will benefit from the same halo effect from The Avengers that Iron Man 3 and sequel Thor: The Dark World enjoyed, as well as firmly establishing Captain America as a standalone franchise.

Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo directed Winter Soldier, and are in talks to return for Captain America 3.

The first Captain America: The First Avenger took in $371 million worldwide, compared to $668 million for Man of Steel. However, Winter Soldier has a shot at matching the $641 million grossed worldwide by fellow Marvel sequel Thor: The Dark World late last year.

This movie is looking so B.A. Great overview (no Spoilers) of both the movie and its relevance to the marvel universe.

'Winter Soldier' is the most grown-up Avengers movie yet]

1. Marvel Comics unlimited library of movie material:
If this is any indication of what happens when Marvel digs into its massive collection of comic-book stories to look for their next film idea, then the future looks bright. The Winter Soldier was the obvious choice when the time came for a new Captain America movie to be made. It was modern, dark, full of top-secret clearances, spying and betrayal. Many fans were surprised when “Winter Soldier” was announced as the next Captain America film. It’s become somewhat common for comic-book movies not to lean too heavily on the source material, instead using them slightly for influences. But this movie shows the advantage Marvel has with its movie universe. Marvel Studios knows it doesn’t have to look too far for its next big idea. (Age of Ultron, anyone?)

2. The Captain, the Falcon and the Black Widow:
One of the most fun aspects of “The Winter Soldier” being adapted into film is that fans knew that there was no way this film could be made without including one of the most important members of Captain America’s supporting cast: Sam Wilson, a.k.a. the Falcon. Given that “The Winter Soldier” takes place in modern times, there is none of the social significance of seeing a black superhero go into battle alongside a white Captain America, like there was when the Falcon made his Marvel Comics debut in 1969. But no Captain America fanboy will be able to withhold the smile that comes from seeing Cap and the Falcon fight side by side on the big screen. Evans and Anthony Mackie have great team chemistry on film. And speaking of team chemistry, “The Winter Soldier” also provides an “Avengers-Lite” moment, as it also stars Scarlett Johansson (returning in the role of the Black Widow). Evans and Johansson are fun to watch as the Black Widow’s 21st-century/anything-goes attitude is always in conflict with a Captain America who has a mind that is sometimes still in the 1940s.

3. The Winter Soldier:
And then there’s the Winter Soldier himself. A rogue assassin who is an equal to Captain America in hand-to- hand combat (and boy, is there a lot of that in this film), and he’s possibly even stronger. Who is he? Now if you’ve read the comics, then you know the identity of the man behind the mask who is somehow connected to Captain America’s past. What makes “The Winter Soldier” so fun is that even if you know the big secret, it’s still fun to watch it all come together in live-action. And if you’re one of the many who will see this film with casual interest — without a strong knowledge of Captain America history — are you in for a surprise.

4. The G.O.A.T.?
Marvel fans should prepare themselves for the fanboy disagreements that will come when they are leaving the theater after their first viewing of “The Winter Soldier.” Is it the best Marvel Studios movie ever? Better than the first “Iron Man” and “The Avengers”? Despite what the first Iron Man and the Avengers movies mean to this superhero franchise, there will be debate after people have seen this film. If you think it’s anything like the first Captain America movie, it’s not. “The Winter Soldier” stands on its own as a film that could set a standard for what is expected from a Marvel Studios blockbuster.

5. Stay until the end:
If you were one of the many fans who left the movie theater after seeing Thanos at the end of “The Avengers” — and were then wondering why everyone kept talking about a funny scene with the Avengers chowing down on food at a half-destroyed deli — well, hopefully you’ve learned your lesson. Yes, we all know there is always an extra scene at the end of a Marvel Studios movie, but sometimes there are two. Don’t leave the theater until movie-theater employees are kicking you out. The surprises waiting at the end of this latest Marvel installment are the biggest ones yet.

I have to say that I am pretty pumped about this movie. I hope it lives up to all the hype it's been getting so far.

Saw it last night and thought it was great. It's possibly the best Marvel film outside of the Avengers IMO.

....for all the people who complain about hollywood and there subplot\subliminal political, ecological, defense machine home land security and living in a terroist world messages, this movie is the he horses hangnail of them all. It is a no holds bared political statement.

Great Movies all the accolades do it an injustice. I wont go into the debate of greasest marvel movie ever as i am prone to the latest is the greatest train of thought but it is a great movie. Redford is still a great actor. Records will fall if for no other reason than word of mouth. Very rarely do word of mouth and ultra hype come into focus at a
perigee above what either could acheive seperatly.

Report back please

I thought it was fantastic. A very good movie (even coming from someone who was already familiar with the comic arc's story).

There's a ton I'd want to talk about it - plot, easter eggs, allusions - but I will restrain myself on that for the moment so as to not reveal spoilers, as the movie is still very new.

(It is also though kind of funny how two directors more known for comedy - the Russos were mainly known for their work on Community and a bit from Arrested Development before these two movies - do such a good job with this type of genre.)

Saw Cap today, and I had a blast. It's probably my favorite Marvel film outside of the Avengers. The action was incredible, especially the hand to hand combat between Cap and the Winter Soldier.

Just got home from seeing it. Much much better than the first.

Unlike Avengers this movie really got to explore Steve Rodgers: Man Out of Time. I remember when Chris Evans was originally cast for Steve Rogers and all I could think about was his role in the abysmal FF movies. He plays the naive soldier following orders in an unfamiliar world perfectly.

Tons of classic Cap characters make appearances but dont feel forced at all. The action sequences were great! Very Borne-esque. The overall plot was solid. This was more of a spy thriller in Marvel U than a straight up Superhero flick.

My only complaint would be that the Winter Soldier did not feel integral to the plot and more should have been done to explore his character. Granted, having read the origianal storyline, it's a longer tale that was told over 6 years and would have been hard to squeeze more in.

Ill refrain from spoilers for a week or so but I will say there are two post movie scenes. One mid credits that sets up Avengers 2 and one after all the credits that is pointing toward Cap 3.

Marvel Confirms Captain America 3 Release Date, Will Face Batman vs. Superman in 2016

Marvel Confirms Captain America 3 Release Date, Will Face Batman vs. Superman in 2016

Following a rumor that was ignited last month, Marvel has confirmed this morning that Captain America 3 will officially debut in theaters on May 6, 2016 where it will face off against Warner Bros.' Man of Steel follow-up, Batman vs. Superman. The second "Captain America" film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier debuted this past weekend to a new April opening record with $96.2 million.

"The Winter Soldier" directors Anthony and Joe Russo are set to return to helm the third film along with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have penned both previous "Captain America" films.

Before debuting in his third solo film, Chris Evans will return as Captain America in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which hits theaters on May 1, 2015. What are you hoping to see in the third Captain America film?

Excellent movie. Just saw it tonight. I really wish ScarJo would go back to the curly hair from Iron Man 2, she was by far the best looking with that haircut. Pretty much the only complaint I can come up with.

I will say, I've heard a lot of "as good as The Avengers" talk. It wasn't as good as The Avengers, but then again I still consider The Avengers to be the new standard for superhero movies.
