Car Repainting

lol

Was this a girlfriend who didn't like the existing paint job, or an angry girlfriend with a couple cans of spray paint??

An extremely anger girlfriend with a baseball bat. The girlfriend saw my friend laughing and talking with another girl......so the girlfriend took it upon herself not to see who the girl was but rather simply beat the Hell out of my friend's Toyota truck. The girlfriend busted the headlights, windshield, driver's door window, back glass, and put one Hell of a dent in the hood. He got the Hell away from that girlfriend and paid for the repairs himself which is why he was shopping for the best price.

The crazy thing is......this was the third time his Toyota had the Hell beat out of it. The first time was his sister and second time was another girlfriend who was straight-up psycho out of the womb.

I told him before he gets the Hell beat out of him, he had better to get rid of that damn truck because it was jinxed, cursed, or simply pure damn bad luck!!

Holy crap. Tough for the truck, but good luck for him to get away from her. No need for that kind of drama in life!

I once knew these two girls who came rolling up in one girl's car at a friend's house one time. They got out, evidently having tarried a bit in the grape, and having stopped at a store on the way over to buy a few cans of spray paint. They had the great idea to decorate the old car with some fun graffiti-style artwork and set to it right there at the curb. One thing they clearly didn't take into account was that neither of them had the slightest aptitude for art, nor a lick of sense between them.

It was very funny watching the smiles and giggles subside as the reality of their progress started setting in. It really just looked like randomass lines of spray paint crisscrossing all over the car very unevenly, glass and all. They basically were vandalizing their own car and starting to understand they had to live with the outcome or spend a bunch of money to fix it. They ended up driving away really dejected. It was hilarious.

Wasn't that a Miranda Lambert song? "Took a Louisville Slugger to both headlights ... "

Depends on the definition of "bad" really. The clear coat is basically peeling off the whole car. The rear bumper oddly enough was the first to go, that crap was peeling off like pieces of paper. The hood, roof, and trunk lid are the worst with about 80%+ loss of clear coat, the sides and doors still have most of the clear coat. The maroon underpaint is still intact I've not spotted any bare metal or rust anywhere.

Yes, the car is old but it's in great running condition and I expect it to last another 100K, it's only got 159K on it. I honestly just want the outside to decent again.

not in Knoxville but....if the body is straight with little to no repairs required, then Maaco does a decent job. I had an Altima that did similar to what you described. They repainted it with polyurethane instead of base coat-clear coat which is more expensive. For a daily driver getting lots of miles, I was perfectly happy with it.
but it was ~$1500.
Most of the body shops just want insurance jobs which kinda sux but that's how they make the most money.

read through the link and it describes different levels and types of car painting

I would expect $2500 for a good job. Is it worth that to you?

I considered a custom color for my Jeep and was looking at $4000, but there's much more that goes into that.

I'd probably go $1500 tops. $1500 is what the guy quoted me at Econo Auto on Kingston Pike. As for your Jeep that sounds about right honestly. The guy at All Colors on Sutherland told me if I wanted a true quality job I'd be looking at $4500. All 3 of the shops told me they'd really have to see the car to give me a true estimate and I can completely understand that. I had 2 different guys tell me a year or 2 ago that the biggest issue would actually be getting the remaining clear coat off. I don't know if that's really a "thing" or not.

Anyone mentioned Earl Scheib yet?

Lol! They shut down nation wide in 2010.

Get your insurance company to pay for it. Tell them it looked great and then some acid rain came through and did this to your car.

Lol

I'd be crazy to be paying full coverage on 19 year old car with disappearing clear coat.

I'll try and get some pics for the thread just for the heck of it.

Used to be, you could volunteer your car at the local VoTech for a paint job as long as you provided the materials.

Friend of the family just had his old Accord repainted due to the same reasons Coug has. He got the entire job done for $500. It was a quality job done by a life-long friend of the family.

If you don't have connections, getting out of a paint & body shop for less than $2,500 would be miraculous, imo.

If you have a garage you can do this yourself. Prep is THE KEY. Watch some youtube vids and read up on the subject. You really don't even have to use a spray gun. No joke, you can use an ultra smooth roller and some tractor paint from Rural King.

Best thing your friend can do for himself, and his truck, is learn what crazy eyes look like and quit dating them.

Just a quick follow up on my friend......he did get rid of the Toyota shortly after getting it repaired.....said he couldn't afford getting it fixed again. Also, he quit going to bars looking for girlfriends......he was fascinated when he found a girl that could out drink him.......he once asked me if I knew any women that could drink a fifth of vodka, 12 pack of beer, and still be able to clearly say "kiss my ass".......this was his standard, and luckily I did not know a woman. He is currently married to a nice lady oddly enough he met at the emergency room.

I've always appreciated those that gave the brush an honest effort. And the spray cans on the rims...without taping the tires.

Painted my farm truck in my barn with Massey Ferguson Grey/Black Tractor paint. Cost me maybe $250 for paint and prep supplies. It is all about the prep work and quality of the paint. Tractor paint is made to last and not fade. Use spray cans for this.

Your welcome.... Lol

The stuff at Rural King also had additives you can buy like gloss hardener. I see no issue with this whatsoever.

In the Knoxville area does anyone know of a decent paint shop for repainting a car? I'm looking at getting a 2000 Honda Accord repainted, and obviously not looking to spend excessively or over what the car is worth. If anyone has any good experience or info feel free to share.
Check with the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Knoxville. Like many have said they will normally do the work for cost of material. Most know these as the old vo-tech schools.

A good paint job is incredibly expensive. I recently painted a late model Ford F-150. Basecoat clear coat. The paint and clear alone with all the hardeners and catalyst and aditives approached $2,000. That was wholesale.

Have you thought about getting a newer car?

Sure, but the car is in great running condition. It'd cost way more in monthly payments and a huge bump in insurance premiums that it wouldn't be worth it.
I love my 2002 Honda Accord, 240,000-ish miles. The paint (silver) is crap, but it’s a gem, and we plan to run it until we walk out one morning to find nothing but a pile of silverish dust on the ground.

I do wish it were shiny, but hell, the guts are good, and that’s what matters for now.

What brand did you use? That seems extreme.
