Jones has issued a mandate that all active roster players study and then present reports on former Volunteers who have worn their current numbers, as well as every All-American that's ever come through the program.
2013 Tennessee football: Every feel-good spring cliche made real? - SBNation.com

I hadn't read that before, I like the idea so that these guys have some knowledge of all the greats that have donned the beloved Orange & White (& sometimes black :) ) before them.

I don't think there's a better way to get these kids to realize what they are representing. I've not been one to say it, but this is another reason Butch Jones just gets it.

I think this is a cool idea. A little history knowledge never hurts.

I like it. Before these guys think about taking a play off or loafing, maybe they will ask themselves if it's worth disgracing not only their own self but every former vol who has worn that number.

Jones has practiced first rate PR, but it's also necessary. Everything about the Tennessee era following Phil Fulmer has been a corrosion of identity.

That's what so many of you have been screaming (rightly so) all along, "We're Tennessee for crying out loud!", or a version of that sentiment. It's also why I personally was glad to have CJG back on the hill, because he knew what being a Vol was-and it didn't seem like anybody else did.

This is all kinds of good, imo.

Personally I think it's cheesy.

Sure it's a little cheesy. But what team building exercises aren't cheesy? Plus, the program is in serious need of rehab and players need to know that there have been players before them that got it done.

Volly, are you still planning on doing a meet & greet for the Chatt. people at Champy's? :) I keep looking for a thread in the Pub but I've probably missed it.

Another reason CBJ gets what dooley never did. Secure your state.
Last years recruits by tnvarsity:

Frank Herron DE 6-5/260 6.1
Jalen Ramsey DB 6-0/190 6.1
Mark Dodson Jr. RB 5-10/193 5.9
Cornelius Elder ATH 5-11/170 5.9
Christian Morris OL 6-6/293 5.9
Jason Carr DE 6-6/280 5.8
Jalen Reeves-Maybin ATH 6-1/198 5.8
Austin Sanders OL 6-5/300 5.8
Jordan Wilkins RB 6-1/210 5.8

These are all 4 or 5 star players from tn. This was almost a top ten class all by itself.

Personally I think it's cheesy.
Quarterback Justin Worley didn't attribute a bad afternoon for the offense to inexperience with the offensive system, but rather the lingering attitude of teams past.

"Just falling back on what we used to do," Worley says, "and that was kind of tucking our tails between our legs and pouting. We need to work on getting away from that, and we've made huge strides, but that's still happening here and there. That hurts, but I think we're making strides in the right direction. Everybody's buying in to what the coaches are teaching and preaching. It's night and day."
if it takes a little cheesy-ness in the spring, to help from getting battered wife syndrome during the fall, then give me extra cheese please.

Not exactly sure what it is you find cheesy about it.

Learning about the greats that wore your number prior to you?

Maybe watching film to see what they did to make themselves great?

Learning what kind of attitude they carried onto the field?

Sorry...if I was a player at UT...I would wanna know everything there is to know about my football ancestry for the # I am wearing.

Give em a double slice of that cheese every day.

I think they were talking about doing another one in May, around the 11th. We had one in April and there were 5 of us there, which was probably good cause the place was PACKED! Girls softball tournament that day, lol.

Not saying I agree with vols520, but I don't understand why some of you are so quick to attack to a board member just because they have a different opinion than yours. He (or she) thinks it's cheesy. So what? Maybe he thinks that the time and effort spent trying to learn about the former players who wore their number could be better spent in the playbook or their school studies.

I find this opinion to be too serious to take seriously

We gave our opinion of his/her opinion?

Are you attacking those who have a different opinion than said poster because they replied to his post with a different point of view?

I say SHAME ON YOU sir or ma'm. Shame on you.

We're going to bring a new excitement to this team.
Consistently successful programs usually have boring springs. If your team has depth and low turnover on the staff, March and April are vanilla by design. Under new regimes inheriting losing teams, April is your own personal NCAA Football Dynasty Mode gone wild - players switch positions, wild new plays and techniques are experimented with and every day's official team practice report has some exciting new detail.

Never thought about it this way but it pretty much describes the state of the program. Can't wait for the boaring springs to come back!

I like the idea. As a fan, I enjoyed the 100 day countdown to last season when we were shown who wore each number. There is great history in this program and I love the idea of our players taking pride in the tradition of UT football.
