CBJ - History Homework

your post has pretty muched summed up the problems of today's America. You don't appreciate history, nor do you feel that you need to learn from it.

I love history. This is just more of an exercise to rile up fans more than anything.

I understand why he is doing it, nothing wrong with it but it's cheesy.

I love it. Nothing like learning the history of whatever you're involved with in order to increase the pride you feel from being a part of it.

A lot of uber-defensive people on here nowadays. Kind of funny.

I like the Butch a lot actually. I never said it was stupid or a bad idea just called it cheesy. Which it most certainly is.

At the end of the day he is a salesman trying to get players and fans to buy in. Fans are needed only for money.

So I get why he is doing it.

Not exactly sure what it is you find cheesy about it.

Learning about the greats that wore your number prior to you?

Maybe watching film to see what they did to make themselves great?

Learning what kind of attitude they carried onto the field?

Sorry...if I was a player at UT...I would wanna know everything there is to know about my football ancestry for the # I am wearing.

Give em a double slice of that cheese every day.

I lol'd at this pretty good.

Correct me if I am wrong Vols520 because I do NOT want to put words in your mouth. By "cheesy" do you think it's overkill, unnecessary, and a waste of time?

Personally I think it's cheesy.

Maybe, but I don't think it will hurt the team to learn about players like Inky Johnson who still sticks around the team and gives motivational speeches. Or Justin Harrell who played in the FL despite having a torn biceps. It may just give them perspective into what it means to give your all for Tennessee today.

Pride in the orange and white is predicated upon knowledge of the historical greatness of Tennessee football. Fulmer used to preach it religiously but it still went in one ear and out the other for some Vol players. I wish I could give proper credit or, to be more precise, blame to the appropriate player but I do not recall his name. In any event, a prominent Vol from the Fulmer era was once quoted as saying that the Vol Walk originated during the Civil War when a general would parade his troops around the hotel before sending them into battle. I apologize in advance for not being able to provide a link as documentation for this factoid.

Because at the end of the day the athletes don't care. He is already doing enough things not sure why this was needed.

Not saying it's a terrible thing to do, but it's cheesy.

The fact that the athletes don't care is precisely why it should be done.

Motivational stuff is important. This just seems a little overkill.

Pick a few things and focus on that. At this point it's like he is just doing stuff to do it.

Make some shirts that say

"We study history...

Because we are sure to repeat it!"

With a pic of some '98 players or something like that.

I don't disagree necessarily. Just poking fun.

Can't build a foundation with one brick.

I see nothing wrong with it. Cheese makes everything better.

I think this is a cool idea. A little history knowledge never hurts.

That depends: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Just couldn't resist. But you know, what Butch is doing is really a great way to instill an extra level of pride in playing at the UT. Too many kids today are just seeing the privilege as a stopover to the pro ranks and MONEY. Losing all sense of pride and loyalty and awareness of the history of the program. Plus the intrinsic and extrinsic value of being part of it. :hi:

Not saying I agree with vols520, but I don't understand why some of you are so quick to attack to a board member just because they have a different opinion than yours. He (or she) thinks it's cheesy. So what? Maybe he thinks that the time and effort spent trying to learn about the former players who wore their number could be better spent in the playbook or their school studies.

Such behavior is standard for VN. But what is nice is that many (certainly not all) can be a PIA today and still chat in a civilized manner tomorrow with the same person. There are exceptions of course but mostly, we manage to do that.

I compare it to bring indoctrinated in the marines.. while they train u to be a marine they also make u know the history u represent without it when the rough gets going u know marines before over came etc n still won. That has to come from within or u fold. The vols have tended to fold..lol

I really enjoyed the article, thanks for posting it bigorange! You get a "like" from me.

There is a lot more in that article than just the history homework, for those that skipped reading it, and jumped right into arguments about cheese.
