I am definitely concerned about that too.

However, I believe the root of the problem is that agents can get away with this kind of stuff. I don't think it's fair that they can make money by ruining kids' careers. There needs to be jail time to stop them from doing things like that.

Just my opinion, and hopefully, there is jail time for this offense. I don't know...it's why I asked the question.

Why would they get jail time? As far as I know there isn't any government laws being broken by giving a kid money. By all means correct me if I am wrong.

If anything it would be nice if the NFL would work with their farm system and punish these agents by banning them or something.

Edit: upon further reading I see some states do in fact have laws on the books. However, the blame is not soley on the agents but the players as well so I'm not sure jail time is fair for one party and not the other. Loss of license to practice is applicable.

Regarding the agents facing any punishment? I don't know. A lot of agents are attorneys and I'm sure they'll find a loop hole.

Plus, the money was received by an "adult" even if it was the player. Ineligibility isn't illegal.

That's part of the problem.

I think there should be a tort or contract action against stuff like this (if there isn't already). If you interfere with a contract, for instance, that can be a civil suit.
Seems like that is exactly what happened where an agent interferes with a players eligibility (which could be seen as a contractual obligation to the school).

The problem is proving damages. If you are injured financially, or otherwise, but can't quantify that injury, courts don't have many options to make you whole again. This typically translates to no penalty for the tortfeasor or contract breached regardless of guilt.

If he needed money Couch should have got his dad or another relative to take the money then give it to him. That is what they do at Auburn and Alabama.

I'm not hating on Couch.

A VFL would not put his team or the university in this type of situation.

I think that's the point of those on here with little tolerance for a player that does such as this.

"My university is on probation. My team has been through quite a bit of turmoil. We are trying to rebuild. How should I conduct myself in mind of that and of fair play in the contract I signed with the Vols? Yah. I'll take money from an agent."

Again, not condoning what he did. Just not turning my back on him from what he's acknowledged as a mistake. I guess it boils down to the whole glass houses thing.
