CBJ says Pig is on track..

I don't see Pig getting much playing time other than as a decoy, backfield blocker, or as an additional RB if Butch decides to run the T Formation, Single Wing, Wishbone.

Or, y'know, whenever VP is winded or if another WR gets banged up or the coaches want to go 4 wide.

Well, at least somebody here understands that Pig can’t be Superman, an F-22 Raptor, and Worf all at once. They ignore the fact that if you put green kryptonite in Superman’s suit, forget to fuel the Raptor, and don’t provide the genetic mix for Worf’s existence (plays getting blown up in the back field), you don’t have success. The outcome too often, is that Pig is ham, bacon, chops and sometimes chitlins.

I'm the one that understands that Pig isn't Superman, just a good solid player, in this exchange.

None of these kids are Superman. But with the right mindset, right coaching, right conditioning,,,,they just may do Super things. On second thought, they have already done Super things. Wearing the Orange & White should qualify.

But you act like thats all he can be, is just a little above average. He has potential to be a really good player and has shown flashes.

I just initially responded to a poster a few days ago who overstated what Pig has shown to be at this point. The guy said he "makes something out of nothing every time he touches the ball". I've simply looked at the results he's produced so far and offered an opinion... he's a good solid slot receiver, a hard nosed, tough kid with pretty good hands TO THIS POINT... he hasn't shown to be a game breaker thus far. Don't know what he's gonna be, what he can be going forward, especially given his lack of commitment to the team in the offseason. He's gotta climb out of the hole he dug for himself and he'll be competing vs much better players for playing time. I hope he's able to contribute.

My point was, when the OL does it job properly, Pig can strut his stuff. Being exploded in the backfield doesn't cut it. The OL pass protected pretty well, they couldn't really consistently open running lanes. As for Neal's production, he ran harder than he ever did, off season he built his strength and bulk. He didn't pull a Tauren Poole and just kept churning those legs, hitting between the tackles hard. Pig is a scatback when used as a runner and not a bulldozer. But if the OL lets the defense flood the backfield, the Pig is penned.

I don't disagree that Pig is talented, has shown flashes of being a dynamic player. He just hasn't shown this mythical game breaking ability that some want to say he has.

I also agree that his lack of success running the "Pig Sweep" the last TWO years had plenty to do with the OL. I didn't state who's fault it is or isn't.....I'm just saying I'm tired of seeing UT run a play that is virtually never successful, I don't care who's fault it is.

Can't argue with that.

i think if ryan jenkins can stay healthy, he'll get quite a few of pig's minutes as well. pig doesn't seem to have that SEC-type speed

Ok but to this point, neither has Von Pearson.

Fair post.

I think there will be at least 5 WRs ahead of Pig in the depth chart. Will he get some playing time? Yes. Will he get much playing time? Doubt it.

Really? 5 WRs ahead of Pig at the slot position? VP and maybe Jenkins or smith, then who?

Keep in mind that VP could slide outside a bit more often if we have an injury or two.

Despite the "fumble" vs uga, I like pig and hope he's around through his senior year!

Let's put it in terms I think we all can agree on..... It would be nice to have Pig back for multiple reasons, but it's not the end-all be-all if he doesn't. He's an upperclassman and needs to carry himself like it, though. He has the most experience of all the WR, most receptions of all returning WR (although his ypc is stupid low, it's DEFINITELY not all his fault), knows the playbook, has the speed and quickness to make things happen IF he can get in the open field, and has pretty reliable hands (iirc he didn't have many drops last year). And guys, don't forget the OL last year are guys that were recruited to play a pro-style offense. They are/were by no means meant for Butch's offense. Ever seen Oregon's OL? They're smaller and much more agile. In read option spread offense you need guys that can get outside and to the next level and block.. Those big 6'6" 330 guys aren't meant for that. This offense has quite a ways to go before it gets to where Butch wants it.

Not 5 WRs ahead of him in the slot position. Just in general. I was refering to your thought that Pig will receive playing time when the O goes 4 wide. I don't see that.

In the slot, I don't see much ahead of him other than Jenkins and VP. However, I wouldn't be suprised to see Croom spend some time (not a lot) in the slot a la Marques Colston.

Many well made points.
