CBJ's offense

Defense is always better than offense in spring games. Plus BJ didn't want to unload the entire playbook on a spring game - it was very vanilla on purpose. It also could be that our Defense has or will improve and the Offense will struggle a bit with a new QB, new WRs, and a new system. Relax, OP.

This--he had the entire offense on one big board, maybe used 10 plays. Plus we were missing Tiny, Croom, Harris, Meredith, Downs, etc.

We will struggle this year on offense....lack of talent
the defense will be better but not enough to compete with SEC teams....

There isn't a lack of talent on O. That claim can be repeated a million times and it will remain untrue.

UT will have one of the most if not THE most talented OL's in the country. There is a VERY legitimate chance that all 5 starters will go in next year's draft barring injury.

There is a significant lack of experience at the other positions but again not a lack of talent. It is a coaching challenge to install a new system but not really much more so with young players as with older players from a different system.

IMO that lack of experience precludes having a QB who just "manages" the offense. The QB has to make plays. Someone has to emerge that can do that. I like Worley but from a pure talent pov I am not sure he's a playmaker in the SEC.

Offense is gonna look kinda of so-so anyways in spring practice games anyway. No great play calling, and also had a lot of guys out with injuries, with Tiny missing that O-Line is very different. IMO.

We will be much better come August. Really can't with to see if RS freshmem Hill is the real deal!!

Wait... the O-W game was LAST WEEKEND??!!

Seriously, it was really cool to see the film of Berry back there with CBJ. How can the twins not sign up after that?

Of course our offense is going to be weak. Not only are the remaining players learning a new system, we lost the only play makers we had excluding Neal who looked surprisingly good.

They only ran like 5 different plays it looked like why do people seem to hate on the zone read so much. It's fundamentally sound football if executed right.

It's not like any teams in the NFL ran it with success this year. Oh, wait.

Am I the only one that thinks our offense is going to be the weak link this year? I'm trying not to read too much into it, but I was so unimpressed with the offense yesterday at the O&W game. The D-line (our D line that is - imagine bama's) was in the backfield all day. The O-line is more used to pass protecting I feel. The few good runs Neal had, he really had to bust some moves to get the yards. We looked so-so at QB and the overall demeanor of the O didn't seem anywhere near the D's. I feel like this year's O could be last year's D; lost in a new system.

Also, it's just weird watching every play be some sort of read-option roll out of the pocket crap. Hopefully it grows on me. It was cool to see the O line up and snap the ball so quick. Thoughts?

This has always been my only hesitation with Butch and company. They seem to be doing everything right but this style offense will have to grow on me. Here's some of my observations.

- Coaches said that the offensive play calls would be very vanilla.

- Of course the D has the advantage of knowing all of the plays.

- Even though I don't care for that type of offense, I do see the strategic advantages.

- When the QB's get up to speed, it could work well.

- The combination of screens, read options, and rolling the qb should make the D a bit slower and force them to think a little more.

- The hurry up should give us an advantage during the regular season, keeping the D from substituting as long as the play calling is on point.

I wonder if the same people freaking out over some read-options, and bootlegs are the same people that told other folks to chill out after Bray went 5-60 in a spring game a few years ago.

As far as the oline, Tiny didn't even play and it was a scrimmage! I'm not worried about CBJ offense, I'm worried about replacing a QB and two WR that were the bulk of the most prolific offense we've had in a long time. Let summer practice play out, get the freshmen in here and we will look much better in August than we do now. Will that mean we will be good enough to beat good teams? Will have to wait and see.

Correction: the most prolific offense we've had in a long time versus crappy teams.

Offensively, we will have a good OL and may be able to run the ball some, but our passing game could be awful, what with completely inexperienced receivers and QBs. And our opponents will get that and load up to stop the run.

:eek:k:
Let me help. No way we are going to have anywhere near a productive passing game.

I think that it was last year, and he was 5 of 30.

That read option crap works. When NFL teams have to look for a way to stop it that means its being taken serious. Those successful college teams out there are using some form of it and winning. You don't have to have it to win but with a good quarterback I'm fine with it. We had one of the best arms in the country last year and we won how many games? Its all about running it correctly and skill players and a good coach. I trust Butch.

Our offensive line is fine. It was a scrimmage and they wanted to keep anyone from getting hurt. Our problem is more at QB than anything. CBJ is a SPREAD guy. He likes his QB's to be more mobile and quick on their feet. They need to be able to throw on the run, accurately! I'm not sure if anyone on the team this year really fits that mold... even Josh Dobbs.

Even though he is considered a pro style QB, I really like David Cornwell. His film shows him throwing on the run a LOT. And he is 6'5" 235lbs. The guy is like a 17 year old Big Ben. Hopefully we make him a top priority recruit.

Looked like Peterman would have had a big gain and a TD if they let him run.

Yea there was a couple of times where he would have picked up a few extra yards and the defense only had to touch him, however, there were also a few times where it could have ended real bad for him, had those guys not pulled up.

Imagine big Dan hitting him at full speed and flopping down on him. The ball would be permantly inside of Peterman.

Let's see, we lose the QB and top four receiving targets from the previous year's squad, and you wonder why the offense is struggling? It's not as much the x's and o's, as it is the Jimmies and Joes. We lost a lot of talent, and the new guys are inexperienced. It should be no surprise that the offense is struggling.

Spot on! Couple that with new coaches, offense and you have the makings of a cluster

I don't think the offense in the fall will look anything like what we saw Saturday and I mean that in a good way. The most encouraging thing I saw Saturday was that Alden Hill was 3 for 3 in 3rd and 3 situations, did we succeed that many times all of last year?
