Lions are still a problem in Africa. They are gorgeous animals and very majestic. But they are also the second largest feline carnivore on the planet and have been and still are killing people. Point being- they look like a pillow pet from a distance but up close they will kill you and they will eat you.
Last I heard lions average upwards of 100 people per year. Of course, one really busy lion or two can really skew the numbers over a short period. The Njombe lions were basically a whole pride that went maneater.
It is more then that. I can't back it up and neither can professional hunters and guides in Africa. Africa is still a very remote area in certain places. The people who don't report lion deaths are the ones who are used to it as just another part of life. Any of the big game hunting books explains it better then me but since getting killed by a lion is still common in area of Africa as shootings happen in America. People still get ripped off of cars (open air vehicles) from lions in southern Somalia. It's just a part of life and no, lions don't deserve to be eliminated all together but they stil deserve the respect of any large carnivore.
For me it's still the crocs. If a croc gets you and nobody is actually there to see it you just "disappear". I'd wager the majority of croc deaths are low-balled...probably by a good margin.
