BUMP
10 years ago tonight, Chappelle's Show premiered on Comedy Central. Hard to believe it's been a decade.
Fun read from Grantland today with a bracket style breakdown of the best skits. A battle for the best 'Chappelle's Show' sketch ever - Grantland
I havent clicked the link yet. Final two of the bracket has to be Rick James episode and the Black white-supremacist with RJ winning the top spot.
I was close but Wayne Brady beating out RJ in the final 4 is a travesty. For months I overheard "I'm Rick James, b!tch!" quoted in bars and casual conversation.
The argument for why the Clayton Bigsby sketch is the best, even if it may not be the most quotable or laugh out loud funny is a fair one. To this day me and my friends quote the Playa Haters Ball with a good bit of regularity. I can't ever think about HBO programming without thinking about "The greatest network of our time." That's probably my favorite sketch of the whole series, with what Silky Johnson says to the guy who insulted his fur coat being my all-time favorite line.
I don't have a problem with Bigsby winning. I had it in my top two. But the Wayne Brady sketch, which was just a parody of Training Day, should not have bumped Rick James IMO. I think the RJ sketch, which needed a whole episode, will hold up better over time. My kids will be able to watch it 18 years from now and get the jokes. After all it was a 20 year old story to begin with.
The WB one is tied to the period in which it aired. Too much explanation of WB clean persona will be needed for it to really make sense.
