You missed my point. His teams don't play defense but thrive on scoring lots of points. He will have the same success in Knoxville as Dooley did unless he can hire a top notch DC and recruits on the defensive side of the ball. This years team scored points and didn't stop anybody. Gundy is not leaving OSU anyway. He will get a raise to stay.
And we all know that saban only wants the best for UT.Strong has some big time people backing him up, including Saban! Anybody want to guess who said those things about Strong?
="He's a great coach and a hard-working guy. He was always a very good recruiter in college, which I think is paramount if you're going to have success as a coach. I think he has all the right ingredients to be successful as a head coach."
=Ties to the SEC, strong recruiter
= spoke to a few guys on staff who worked with him and said this hire scares them more than any other they heard about us. This guy is going to be good.
ok I sorta get that...but still he is leagues above Dooley on coaching ability....how about this....hire Gundy and then try and talk Butch Davis into being the DC....that would equal a home run hire....Davis doesnt have much opportunity at a HC at a big school, so why not take a major coordinator position....better pay than sitting at home and he is a hell of a DC...
Yeah let's bring in a coach who can recruit.......
Strong's team is currently rated 71st in recruiting and his average recruiting ranking over the last 4 years at Louisville is almost identical to Kragthorp's 4 years there. I have been trying to find out what the source of Strong's reputation as a good recruiter is and no one has been able to come up with anything.
He is probably a decent coach since they have a good record this year but the previous years records were not very good. It was a bit of a rebuilding job but I don't think UT needs to settle for a guy who has had one good year.
