Chase Burns....

I have talked to Chase multiple times since last season ended and he did not once trash Coach V or Coach A. His only complaint was he thought he earned the right to try to start again after going to the bullpen and succeeding. My comment to him was that once something starts working for a coach, myself included, you don't want to change it so when it was working good for him to finish games there was no need for him to go back to starting last year. But he never trashed the coaches or his teammates. I would love to see the video where he trashed Coach V or Coach A. If it is out there and he truly trashed them, my feelings toward Chase will probably change but I've not seen it. Even when he committed to WF, he said he appreciated what the coaching staff at UT had done for him and he loved his teammates.

I did know a guy who was a starting infielder for an SEC school in the early 90's you know, back when it was hard to transfer. He transferred to a D2 school because the SEC coach would not give him a chance to pitch. He got drafted a year or two later, as a pitcher and had a decent minor league career.

Totally understand the coaches not changing something that is working, especially when it benefits the team and the athlete. However, I don't see it as a reason to leave unless, the coaches were never going to give Burns a chance to start again. I kinda find that hard to believe and figure they would revisit the next season but that's just an assumption.

I will say that part of Chase's problem was who was in his ear. He did not get the best advice from some people around him. But as I have said, it worked out for us and it worked out for him. I'm not sure how the season would have gone with him here but I know how it turned out and I can't argue with our success or his. He got what he wanted and we got what we wanted so I don't understand why the hatred for him just keeps going. It did not hurt us in the long run and it did not hurt him. I don't see why people cannot be happy for people who helped us and then made what they thought was the best decision for them whether we personally liked it or not.

One could counter and say he essentially was a starter against Clemson and Stanford in the NCAAT. He pitched 6+ innings in those games. Those are starter innings.

He wouldn’t have been the 2nd pick if he didn’t transfer.

It worked out for us and it worked out for him.
People can poo poo it all they want but moving conferences helped him tremendously. They’ve never had anyone come through the ACC with that type of pitching. No team had an answer for him. The SEC is notorious for figuring pitchers out after having an offseason to scout them. Beam had a tremendous career here but his ERA went up every single year because once you are pitching that many innings in one conference they start to figure you out.

No hatred for Burns but he ran away from the fight imo. You can’t tell me he isn’t going to have some type of regret knowing he passed up a national championship. He was going to be a top 10 pick regardless of where he pitched. We ended up winning a national championship without the best pitcher in the nation and also without our Friday night starter. Can’t think of any national champions that have pulled that off. For any player that wants to question this coaching staff and seek greener pastures, just know the grass (or turf) isn’t greener anywhere else than in Knoxville, TN.

Not a single relief pitcher was taken in the first round, so to say that is probably false. Although, I think he was projected mid 1st rounds, so I could be wrong.

He wanted to be a starter, and it worked out for him, kudos to him.

We found some guys in the portal that helped us win a National Championship. Again, it worked out for both parties.

Ultimately, us fans won. We got a championship.

He was projected as a starting pitcher in MLB even after 2023. Those scouts know exactly how that stuff would translate and regardless if he was long relief or starter in college, he was going to get starter innings. He was always going to be selected as a starter for the draft. He was rated the 5th collegiate player prospect back in October. Don’t let anyone fool you.

This. MLB doesn't draft based solely on your college role. A lot of college starters are bullpen guys or long relievers in professional baseball. Burns had shown enough that scouts and organizations could project his future role. He benefits from having shown that he could succeed in a multitude of roles across three college seasons and two programs. He may not have gone #2 overall, but there wasn't a healthy scenario where he wasn't going 1st round, regardless or 2024 role or program.

So his complaint really was that he didn't get put back in the starting rotation midseason? I'm not trying to hate on the guy, but that's a bit too much of a "me first" attitude for my liking. I agree that a coach isn't likely to upset the apple cart when the current approach is working well. Not to mention the fact that Chase absolutely would've been given the chance to be a starter this year had he not transferred. There was a quote in an article in The Athletic a few months back where he said he didn't feel like he had to prove himself to anyone, and I very much took that as a shot at Tennessee.

It's water under the bridge, I suppose, but it's always going to be lame to me that he had people chirping in his ear about a 100% justifiable decision that Tony and Frank made (and stuck to throughout the season).

I'm just weary of hearing about him on VN. He left of his own accord...an EX-Volunteer.
