I think I, like at least some people, decide against helping the homeless based on one experience. It sucks, and I'm not proud of it, but I'm honest.

I was out with a friend of mine on the Strip a couple years ago. We decided we wanted to go to grab some crappy food at Cook-Out after the bar, so we walked over there. On the way, a guy stopped to ask for money. We brushed it off as we didn't have cash. I don't remember what his story was or how we responded. Probably just said we didn't have cash and that we were sorry we couldn't help.
We got to Cook-Out and ordered. We finally got our food and started eating. I tend to save my chicken quesadilla til last. The same homeless dude walked into Cook-Out and started asking for money for food because of low blood sugar. I vividly remember this, as it was a completely different story than the one he first told us on the street.
Anyway, I still had no cash, but I gave him my untouched chicken quesadilla. Dude snatches it out of my hand and walks out of the restaurant. No thanks, no 'preciate it. Just gone.

Happens all the time in Memphis, beggars claiming to be veterans really pisses me off(I'm not one , but every other man in my family is and a few close friends) I've given them money food and directions to shelters. There's one that frequents Cordova who walks with a fake limp imitating a cancer patient claiming he got cancer in the army. Really chaps my ass.

I never even thought about the notion of them lying about service...damn

Was the person in line behind you at Starbucks or chicfila properly vetted? How many freebies do you think Jared Fogle got in the last decade? Doing it in a drive thru is sterile, safe and only done to make the giver feel better about themselves imo

I would think most aren't homeless by choice. Many do have mental issues and lack real human interaction which could limit their social graces. Totally different worlds but at least you know the man ate that night

Ask them what branch /unit/ platoon/ war / the true one will speak like a military veteran the fake ones will start blabbing on about non sense.
Sad but stolen valor is rampant.

Sorry but this chic fil a stuff is safe, selfish kindness. Real kindness would be buying a meal for someone who can't afford it rather than the soccer mom who already ordered. You know that guy holding a sign at the intersection? Go grab 2 chicken sandwiches and give them to him. Pick up an extra $10 worth of groceries next shopping trip and drop them off at the food bank. Order a box of diapers or formula from Amazon and have them delivered to a local woman's shelter. For every toy you buy your kids this Christmas make sure to drop one in the toys for tots box. Just a few ideas we use and hope to pass on to our kids

I completely understand what you're getting at and don't disagree with the sentiment but we should give help where is most truly needed. Don't waste the effort

Sorry pj, but I think it's quite petty to pick apart an act of kindness.
