A powerful New York politician claims she was just speaking as a private citizen when she tried to run Chick-fil-A out of town, but she used her official letterhead and even invoked her position as City Council speaker to apply pressure on the embattled chicken chain.
She can write to someone as a council member, but if she states that she is writing as the Speaker it can only be on behalf of the entire council. She has to have the unanimous vote of the council, and I dont recall voting on this matter, City Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens) told FoxNews.com. A stance on gay marriage is in no way a forum to prevent someone form running a business in a community.
If we allow something like this, then the next letter might be considering someones view on abortion.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said last week that he would not follow the lead of his counterparts in Chicago, San Francisco and Boston, who all said Chick-fil-A was not welcome in their cities. Bloomberg said it was inappropriate for any government to decide if a business can or cannot operate in a city because of someone's political views.
im sorry...i should have made my comment clearer...I meant as members....I would invite anyone to come and hear the word of God....but not members....meaning they are snubbing their noses at the Bible and saying we are better than the written word....I will edit....
As one who does not believe in gay marriage I have to disagree with you on this one. My belief is that God welcomes everyone so should his churches, being gay is not a sin or IMO condemend in the bible. Acting on it (gay sex) just like adultry.
What Bible are you reading ?
Mine says that gay sex and adultry are both sins and condemned.
how about divorce? Sex before marriage? What's the Bible's view on those kind of things?
I've heard it before. I think what he is saying is that to love someone of the same sex isn't a sin. The sinful act is having sex with them. Two men/women wanting to live together because they love each other isn't the sinful act. The sex between them is.
Or so I've heard.
People are mistakenly making this about theology.....I'm no expert, but I did graduate from seminary. Getting two people to completely agree on theological topics is crazy enough...
In fact, this situation would be no different from any mayor/council person putting together a checklist for business owners. IE whether you are a Christian or a non Christian you would be forced to state your position on a laundry list of beliefs before you were able to open a business in said community.
That is not religious freedom....that is not freedom of any sort.
It just feeds the far right who will turn over rocks looking for eschatological signs that the persecution of Christians has begun.
