CHIEFS vs EAGLES Official SUPER BOWL LIX Discussion Thread

A big part of the Chiefs hate is simply the perception, right or wrong, that you have to beat them and the refs. Mahomes plays the game, including the rule book, like a maestro. A big part of his success is his raw intelligence (but that’s another topic).

As a frequent reader of several fan boards, there is a major sense among the broader NFL fan base that the league has, somewhat legitimately, legislated away any true kryptonite the Chiefs may have. They’ve never had to overcome their Bad Boy Pistons, because the league has extinguished that possibility in the first place.

Not saying I agree or disagree with that. It’s just the vibe I pick up on.

Definitely some finessing going on with Mahomes and the refs, which is pretty common with the great players in sports...

I have no problem with those kinds of complaints. What I don't get is why the refs would willfully rig things for the Chiefs, as I see many "rigged" claims? Why would Goodell, or the other owners, or the refs do that? It's not even a big market team.

If Chiefs get 3 Superbowls in a row I’m gonna call it a cheatpeat

Just for grins was replaying the game and on the point after just before half the same linesmen called KC offsides on the snap below, the ball is not visible because it is lifted already. See anybody offsides? Before shot to establish neutral zone too.

Did not lead to points, but still an offsetting call.

You were really close on your AFC Championship prediction.
Yeah... a little too close. However, I was dead wrong on the NFC Championship. So, here's updated predictions:
AFC CHAMPIONSHIP: Chiefs ended up winning, 32-29
NFC CHAMPIONSHIP: Eagles won big-time, 55-23

SUPER BOWL LIX PREDICTIONS: Chiefs, 42-35 in a very entertaining game that comes down to the final two minutes.

98's head is in the neutral zone, should've been a first.

The ball is spotted with the tip AT the yard line, not the center and to be in the zone you have to be beyond that point.

Just like an automatic first down only has to touch the leading edge after a touchback. So almost all that white line is onsides cause the neutral zone is the ball length from leading edge of line and behind. After the ball is snapped, his helmet is over half the line in that shot, not beyond.

The biggest indictment against "the NFL is rigged" claims is simply looking at the Jets and Giants records for the last 10+ years (even longer for the Jets). Cowboys probably too.

And you're right, if they're looking for a team to rig up a dynasty for, the Chiefs aren't near the top of that list.

Overall I think NFL is more balanced than college, but judgement calls do seem to be applied differently for example roughing the passer. Same minimal contact to the head in the pocket is a foul for less athletic QB’s and evidently considered incidental for those that do feature their legs.

PI calls in same game get me fired up to. The play leading to the point after was a TD pass, but a PI would have been 1st at the one. It was called.

Go back and compare all elements of the contact on that play to any number of others not called on both teams and see what YOU think. Looks like he was definitely looking back and playing the ball. Did he impede the receiver? Time critical plays may change judgement. Should it?

Did Bills get a call?
Great play, bad call in context of the game based on the rest of the calls I have seen.

Imagine if the Lions got in to the Superbowl, the buzz would be to the moon. If the NFL wanted to rig things it would have been Buffalo vs Minnesota or Detroit

The game is called the way it is to increase scoring. Both in terms of giving the offense yards for roughing the passer, DPI, illegal contact, etc. and changing the way defensive players have to play to avoid those penalties. I think it has particularly changed the way safeties in college have to play, because a targeting foul ejects them from the game.

I'm not sure - the Taylor Swift angle is still a huge thing for non-football fans. They really, really want her at the Super Bowl again.

People complain so much about the way the game is officiated now, but can you imagine the league without these rules? The first half of the season was dominated by defense resulting in mediocre QB play and fans were bored. We want the rules to favor offense.

Also, remember that season a couple years ago where so many big name QB's were hurt and it was backup QB's all over the place? That was awful. We don't like that, so yeah, the rules should go overboard in protecting the biggest stars, who are also the most vulnerable players.

Not going to criticize how they enforce a rule as long as it is consistent, from minute 1 to minute last and same for both teams. Not expecting perfection but can’t handle wildly different application of rules within games or game to game. Goal should be consistency across all crews. Human nature will make that tough.

Josh Allen looks at both refs and decides to throw it to the one with the worse spot. That was the 1st down right there. Wherever the spot ended up being, it wasn't gonna get overturned.

Since 2001, there have been 125 playoff possessions with a team down by a score with ~1 minute left. Leaguewide, QB's have about a 40% success rate. Tom Brady is 5/11.

Patrick Mahomes is 7/7
