China Thread

Pentagon officials told the Journal that the ships complied with international law, saying the Chinese actions were in accordance with the principal of "innocent passage." A Pentagon spokesman defined that principle by saying the ships "“transited expeditiously and continuously through the Aleutian Island chain in a manner consistent with international law."

How do you navigate through the Aleutian Islands without crossing into US waters? This is a non-issue.

no idea. still going with hard, and some more civil unrest somewhere. of course that isn't much of an reach of a prediction.

China protests by Fanya Metal Exchange investors - BBC News:ermm:

not saying I called it because it wasn't much of a prediction on my part, and it hasn't gotten as bad as I thought. But its the start. Also I wonder how much of the "newness" of the stock market risk is influencing the Chinese reactions. People are up in arms that they lost money. I know we are the same, but wondering how much worse their reaction will be because of how unused to it they are.

Modern dangers.

Magna Carta Exhibition in China Is Abruptly Moved From University

But then the exhibit was abruptly moved to the British ambassador’s residence, with few tickets available to the public and no explanation given.
. . .
In 2013, the party issued its “seven unmentionables” — taboo topics for its members. The first unmentionable is promoting Western-style constitutional democracy. The Chinese characters for “Magna Carta” are censored in web searches on Sina Weibo, the country’s Twitter-like social media site.

Sounds like a country extremely worried about a US military attack and/or invasion.

Rest assured though that RT's Op-Edge still thinks it's imminent, so, as long as they're right, we'll still get the US-China war all of us have so desperately been praying for.

China's military isn't that good. Like Russia they use conscripts and not professional soldiers. China's are is for for defending the government from the Chinese people then it is defending it from foreign powers.

That summation of the People's Liberation Army's role is spot on. If I recall correctly, it's even officially stated in the PLA's annual defense report (the so-called "white paper") that the primary goal of the PLA is ensuring the stability and perpetuity of the CCP, which is basically a nice, euphemistic way to state that the PLA's primary goal is to suppress the Chinese people and keep them from ever challenging the CCP. Everything else is secondary, although, like Russia, the PLA is modernizing by cutting its conscript (aka, trash troops) forces and investing in technological upgrades. These longterm investments are meant to project Russian and Chinese power, a marked turn from the defense-based militaries they've each been over the past 30 years or so.

Beijing just summoned the US ambassador to have a talksie about the matter.

If I were our ambassador to China, I'd show up, put a copy of the NYT on China's intrusion into US territorial waters from back in September on the desk and then just leave.

See how those little hypocritical whiners like that.

I would also bring a map that shows international waters and a gps tracker of the ship and its path.

What would you do for the rest of the day?
