China Thread

Red China is smart enough to not push against the United States very far.

Q: What happens when a Mexican and an Chinaman make a baby?

A: A car thief who can't drive is born.

An issue that Trumpy-boy is going to have to figure out.

Yeah, because Obama-boy was out to lunch, golfing, partying, handing out downgraded medals, or something else rather than doing anything about the escalating problem in the S China Sea. But then that's been how the Obama administration rolled - just alternately kicking a can down the road, or ignoring them altogether. The election system was considered secure - until the Dems lost; now it's an issue, but not the S China Sea or any of the myriad of other things the administration has mishandled or simply ignored.

FoxNews: Trump calls out China. President-elect accuses Beijing of stealing US Navy drone. Looks like sh!t is about to hit the big spinning fan.

I agree.

I guess we just have to hope that Trump is up to the challenge. Neville Chamberlain could have easily replaced Obama and the Clinton/Kerry SOS team and never missed a beat, but Chamberlain would have at least appeared more respectable - rather than like refugees from SNL. The SOS acronym never seemed more appropriate than state matters with the Obama crew at the helm.

We can hope, but reality will soon tell us differently.

China has agreed to return a US navy submarine drone seized by the Chinese navy in the South China Sea following a formal protest from Washington.

“We have registered our objection to China’s unlawful seizure of a US unmanned underwater vehicle operating in international waters in the South China Sea,” said Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook. “Through direct engagement with Chinese authorities, we have secured an understanding that the Chinese will return the UUV (drone) to the United States.”

I don't know what to make of this:

Actually, I think he has a point.

They're just going to reverse-engineer it. Taking it back would look kind of pansy-ish.

Unfortunately, once he's in charge, talk of stolen American drones will sound quaint.

Too bad somebody wasn't thinking ahead and booby trapped it.

It would be just too much fun to tell them "Guess you shouldn't have stolen something and then tried to take it apart."

Is it more high-tech than the drone Iran captured five years ago?

I suppose it depends on how long they keep it. If only a few days or even a few weeks, yeah, take it back. If after that time frame, I really don't see the point. Take it back or tell them to keep it at that point, neither really matters anymore. The reverse-engineering has been completed at that point.

The Chinese probably have the plans in the hoard of hacked info - just a matter of verifying which species they caught.

Most people seem to be concerned about the Russians; I personally think it's the Chinese we should be considering the boogeyman. Between their hacking, the globalization that's actually put our manufacturing on their soil, and the loss of manufacturing in this country, I fail to see how we counter them. Russians are crude and act so. The Chinese will simply wait and take all the time they need and commit only when they have everything settled - probably won't even feel the knife slide in.

Just nothing like teaching a behemoth all the tricks and then putting a big hole in your strategic resources; it makes Chamberlain's encounter with the Nazis only mildly naive by comparison.

Trump says to let the Chinese keep the Drone. And you morons expect us to agree with you that Obama is too soft?

If the Chinese can't create a UUV that does the same underwater measurements as ours they must have a problem. Hopefully next time the USNS Bowditch returns to the South Chian Sea it has a Destroyer escort.

China is spending 2x-3x on it's military what Russia is.

An important difference being that China is generally OK with a US-lead international structure, while Russia is seeking to destroy it.
