Taiwan Bans Video Streaming From Chinese Giants Tencent and Baidu

The Taiwanese government announced on Thursday that it will block โ€” or, more precisely, finish the job of blocking โ€” video streaming services from Chinese mega-corporations Tencent and Baidu.

The lockouts will go into effect on September 3.

The Verge explained that mainland Chinese streaming services have been largely illegal in Taiwan for some time, but Tencent and Baidu have services called WeTV and iQiyi, respectively, that were allowed to operate under a โ€œlegal loopholeโ€ because they have partnerships with Taiwanese firms. Thursdayโ€™s directive from the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs closed that loophole.

โ€œThe move shows how Chinese tech companies are facing increasing difficulty in pushing into other markets as geopolitical tensions continue to rise. President Donald Trump has moved to ban Tencentโ€™s WeChat and ordered ByteDance to divest itself of TikTokโ€™s US operations, while India blocked dozens more Chinese apps earlier this year,โ€ The Verge observed.

the thing is, once it goes hot in one area I think you could see some neighbors jump in too. China and South Korea don't see eye to eye, heck even North Korea has had a couple border issues with China. Vietnam and China have already had some skirmishes over the islands, and from what i am hearing Vietnam is looking to take the fight to China. but ultimately i don't think the international community allows it to go down. The US has alliances with Japan and the Philippines which have been discussed on what those mean, and how they could drag us into war with China over some of these issues. Basically China has too many problems to be able to focus on just fighting Japan, which would be a big advantage for Japan.

Iโ€™ve seen a couple articles like this lately showing the US, India, Australia, and Japan are making some moves in the region.

More Than A Dozen Researchers And Professors At US Universities Have Been Arrested For Ties To The Chinese Government

More than a dozen students, researchers, and professors at American universities have been arrested in the last year on charges related to lying about their ties with the Chinese government, often while accepting US-taxpayer-funded grants.

The Justice Department has focused much effort on investigating individuals with ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) who use their positions on American campuses to benefit Beijing, often by recruiting talent or stealing intellectual property. Between 2019 and 2020, at least 14 people were arrested on related charges.

While some suspects were investigated and charged in 2019, escalating tensions with China in 2020 appeared to ramp up efforts to hold these individuals accountable.

In August, a Chinese official accused the U.S. of monitoring and harassing Chinese students and researchers at American campuses. Sanctions placed on Chinese entities โ€”such as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, a paramilitary group which operates much of the economy in Xinjiang and allegedly orchestrated the persecution of minorities โ€” also inflamed tension.
These are the individuals who work or study at colleges across the U.S. whoโ€™ve had ties to the Chinese government and have been charged with crimes related to their concealed affiliation:
