VFH posted that comment that it took thousands of gun rounds by the CAF to take out the balloon in 80's. Obviously you would not want that as aircraft gun munitions do not self detonate or have proximity fuses.
From what I have seen the AIM-9X went thru the balloon without detonating the fuse. You would not want a missile on such a path.

Oh this was absolutely simple. An unmanned air vehicle from a hostile power makes an unauthorized entry into U.S. airspace and is unable to leave. It was done on purpose. There is nothing delicate about it. It should have been immediately shot down. End of story. Let them bitch and complain all they want they only have themselves to blame.

Based on the comments would not surprise me if prior incursions were briefly over Alaska and maybe Canada but that's it
Would explain the lack of concerns when this one appeared at first to be doing the same thing but then got much more serious.

That's why you don't see me bashing Trump over this or claiming hypocrisy, because it seems this one was very unusual in how far it went.
