Chris Low's Preseason Ballot

the difference in a 6-6 or 7-5 type "hold the line" season and a good season of 8-4 or better is beating UF. They come to Knoxville. IF we want to have a good season, we need to win that one.

This was his take on the east

EAST
1. South Carolina
2. Georgia
3. Florida
4. Tennessee
5. Missouri
6. Vanderbilt
7. Kentucky

Pretty fair analysis:

1&2 are about even on talent, USCe with a significant edge on coaching though.
3,4,& 5 are about even on talent (both are home games).
I think UK beats Vandy this year, so I would flip them. UK brings back most of their starters and recruited well last year. Vandy lost all their stars, recruited poorly and must learn new coaching schemes

Low has us picked to finish 4th in the East, and the following order in the West.
WEST
1. Alabama
2. Auburn
3. Mississippi State
4. LSU
5. Ole Miss
6. Texas A&M
7 Arkansas

I'm curious as to where you would pick us to finish if we were in the West?
6th....maybe 5th
3rd east

This year isn't gonna be pretty. But this year isn't about our record. The growing pains are gonna hurt worse than last year.

If we can't get back to at least five wins again this year then it'll be a huge indictment on Butch Jones as an actual football coach as opposed to Butch Jones the recruiter.

We beat Florida, Mizzou, Kentucky and Vandy. Our tough early schedule prepares us to be ready for these games!

Can't really agree with that part. Too many potential variables through the season. If we had a good roster of experienced players already, I could agree.

I expect a minimum of six wins though, barring ridiculous injuries like we've experienced in the past.

To finish 3rd in the East will require 8 wins or more. And with UT having to rely on so many freshman is asking a lot of this team. The schedule is brutal and every starting lineman will be replaced this year, this is going to be a tough year. To think Mizzou is fixing to fall off the map is ridiculous. Did everybody forget about Matty Mauk? And UF will not be the same team as they were last year. If UT goes 6-6 Butch will be named coach of the year. It will be 2016 when the wins come and too many fans are assuming to much of these freshman to make significant impacts in their first season.

Understand what you're saying and perhaps you were dealing in hyperbole, but going 6-6 ain't gonna get Butch a sniff for coach of the year. Now, 9-3 is a different story, assuming a couple of those are nice upset wins....say on the road at Georgia and either Florida or Bama at home. That's what it would take IMHO.

Not saying it will be SEC or NCAA, but there would be some smaller publications that would recognize how hard it will be to make a bowl game this year. And it is a stretch for me to assume this, but there will have to be major improvement for this years team to make a bowl game this year.

We will play six games against teams with worse talent and five of those games will be in Knoxville. I'm fully realistic about what our prospects are this year, but winning only four games would be a huge step back. Hard to sell the future if a one-man Vandy team can lose its one man (and its coach) and still beat you.

Mizzou will not fall past 4th IMO. Vandy is better than we give them credit and Florida has a lot to prove. That being said I'd put Georgia at 1, SC at 2, Mizzou at 3, Florida at 4, Tennessee at 5, Vandy then KY.

Mizzou or UT or even Vandy could move up. Florida or SC could move down.

Nevertheless, I see Georgia winning the East. jmo

What's your opinion of Butch's coaching ability based on last year?

BTW, if we only win 4 games next year, it means we probably lose to Vanderbilt for the 3rd consecutive year. No excuse for that period.

Anything less than a bowl birth this year is going backwards, regardless of the lack of experience. If he's good coach, he will find a way to get us to 6 or 7 wins this year.

Surely it's fair to start forming an opinion in year two, right? If he's a championship-caliber coach, he won't lose 8 games this season.

What would Vandy have been like last year without Jordan Matthews? I see no reason to give them any credit at all with him gone.

Ah, four wins is your thing. I was just saying I don't think you can base coaching ability on losses in a season that hasn't been played yet. Nobody saw three of our four quarterbacks being injured last year.
