Chris Spielman Sues Alma Mater Ohio State

Zero chance Peyton Manning ever sues UT for using his likeness.

One, UT is not wreckless. Two, Peyton isn't looking to solve the world's "problems." Three, he would look to handle it quietly if there was any issue.

OSU didn't appear to budge when handling it quietly. Here are quotes from Spielman on this:

"Ohio State can use my name-in-likeness anyway they want to promote the university. The problem came in when that banner had a corporate logo on it–a Honda logo–and I was never involved in that conversation of ‘Hey, do you want to be a part of this Honda promotion?"

"And the problem that I had was well, wait a second–I’ve had about a 20-year relationship here in Columbus, Ohio with Mazda. And so all of a sudden I look like a hypocrite and I got to clean up the mess with Mazda because they used my name-in-likeness with a corporate logo without asking me or asking me to be involved in a relationship or partnership, and getting my permission."

"And so, we brought this to their attention eight months ago and tried to make them give us a legitimate settlement, a negotiation for eight months, and we never got a firm offer. And so after eight months, you have to stand up and do something."

That part just didn't make the article?

I read a piece that quoted Spielman as saying this suit was a last resort after trying to deal with it internally.

Edit: and if I had gone one more page my memory would have been jogged.

So he asked for a settlement cause they put his picture on a banner?

Navigate it without sueing his alma mater and making it a national story???

Maybe there was no way around it. Somehow I doubt it.

Why do you doubt it? Because major colleges have always dealt fairly with their student-athletes, both current and former?

Because of the thousands and thousands of student athletes who haven't had to sue their school over something silly???

Literally every college football player that was represented in the EA Sports franchise got a settlement from the class action suit. In the last 20 years are so, it's harder to find a player who hasn't had a claim against his school.

Further, what is "silly" about insisting that your alma mater not use you in an advertisement for a company that qualifies as your competitor?

That EA lawsuit was dumb. What did it do? How much money did they get from that?

All they've done is get rid of an awesome video game. Wow. What an accomplishment. They really did a lot of good with that.

I bet all the college football players of today are sooooo glad that Ed Obannon spared them from the horror of getting to be on a video game played by millions.

How is it stupid? Every other athlete in every other sport gets paid for appearing in those games. Why shouldn't college football players?

Blame the schools for that. EA has made it clear that they would be glad to make it and pay the players. The NCAA simply won't license it. Your frustration is with the wrong party.

Do you guys listen to the Swain show and weep when he talks about how his knees hurt from playing football?

Judge: If you use players in the game, they must be paid.

Players: We be glad to allow our images to be used in the game assuming we get paid.

EA: We would be glad to make the game and pay the players.

NCAA/Schools: If the players have to be paid, then the game cannot be produced.

There is only one party standing in the way of that game getting made.

For the record, I'm about a dozen years removed from playing video games.
