I graduated from Memphis, so I like to pull for them, but the last time we played them at the Liberty Bowl and won by a ridiculous margin, me and my buddy and his wife saw the worst in Memphis fans. Here I am in the student section, clad in beautiful, bright orange amidst a sea of blue and some drunk Memphis fan grabbed and destroyed a sign a UT fan was holding in front of him.
Please, oh dear, sweet merciful God above, let an 8-4 or 9-3 Memphis and UT team meet in a bowl game this year. Let the title of "best team in the state" be taken on the field.
good less money to Memphis the better..one of the most corrupt cities in AmericaA lot of that has to do with the fact that the state has siphoned tax dollars out of Memphis for decades and pumped them into Knoxville while funding the University of Memphis like it's a community college. As if higher education simply isn't a concern for the western part of the state.
Like you said, it has nothing to do with sports.

Our last two mayors make Richard Nixon look as pure as the driven snow. If the voters have any sense they'll get rid of the current jacka** in a few weeks.
The city is actually improving quite a bit nowadays despite the incompetent and corrupt morons running it.

Getting into politics here but Wharton is no gentleman, doing away from retirees insurance and people who've contracted cancer from being firemen and police men who have cancer just cutting them off and them not having any insurance is about as scummy as you can get... He is SCUM...Not sure you can compare Wharton and Herenton. Herenton was corrupt and all about himself. Wharton is known as a gentleman but hasn't been a good leader. There is a huge difference.
Obviously, this thread has mentioned the split between the UT system and Board of Regents and their funding. The BOR covers a lot. U of M has some very good departments. I am a Memphis law grad, and I am very appreciative for that education. The law school is beautiful and a great program.

Sell Memphis to Arkansas or Mississippi. Sorry but if we could TN would leap ahead in crime rate and education rankings. I know the university and the city has its positives. But as a whole it is terrible, which sucks for the good folks that post here.

Yea, probably not the place to get into it. But he was in my profession for a long time, and he was known as a gentleman. Politics is different because any decision will make someone upset. Hate to say it, but cities like Memphis have to find ways to cut expenses. Not saying that one should be cut over others, but it just has to be done. If that is the worst, he is no Willie Herenton, and it's not even close.
Memphis' problem was they added to the city while trying to chase the taxpayers. Now they have expanded and the people have moved further east, they have to provide for all those areas and the taxpayers just aren't there.
A few of the best high schools in the state and even on some top lists in the country are in the greater Memphis area. I am not talking about private schools either. They are very good schools. A few years ago, the wealthiest zip code in the state? In Germantown. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, and as you say, there are positives.
