Best Buy stays in business because of home theater sales. That's it. Tremendous amount of margin, even when you're getting deals.

I sell PC's at Best Buy right now (not for much longer -- trying to get a job in the automotive industry).

Yes, there is profit involved for us in service contracts. Not to say they're not worth it, though. After dealing with technology all day, I guarantee you this: stuff breaks. It just does. A lot. And for the most part, especially with computers, getting the manufacturer to cover anything under warranty is generally a headache. Minimum two week turnaround time, occasional shipping charges, poor tech support, call centers based in India among other things.

I'm sure you've all heard horror stories about Geek Squad. I know the SOP for product coverage inside and out, and it does cover quite a bit. Just need to make sure the people you're dealing with are following the rules, which doesn't happen sometimes. RARELY but sometimes.

i'll tell you one thing. i bought some phones a couple years ago and best buy and bought the extended warranty. the phones died and i went back and exchanged it. they no longer sold or made the phones i have, so they told me to pick out a phone close to the price. i got new phones that were better and have a much longer range than the ones i had before. so it was worth the extended warranty.

Cat's maybe, but McKay's in Knoxville is either a gold mine or there's a casino underneath it. It's rare to see it's parking lot empty during business hours.

went to the CC on N. Peter's Road tonight and picked up an Xbox 360 wired Xplorer guitar for 10 bucks. brand new in the box. not much else caught my eye except a pair of Creative T10 speakers, but at $54, they're too expensive.

mckays will never go out of business, they sell alot of stuff at a really good price. alot of people have to get rid of cd's and dvd's for money.

Once the bancruptcy liquidation sales start, the salepeople's hands are pretty much tied. Everyone who shows up the first month or so will be disappointed by how slim the savings are. Stocks of certain staple items will dwindle due to no new shipments so it will look emptier each time you return. At some point they will hit discounts in the 40-50% range and the decent stuff will fly out the door. I've seen this happen over the years at various stores, Media Play and Tower come to mind.

Yeah, if you want to buy overpriced stuff.
That's why Circuit City is out of business. Overpriced everything in the store. I've always laughed at the phrase, "I got a great deal at Circuit City". That means they marked it down to the same price everyone else sells it for.

actually went by BB yesterday and it at least looks like they are getting their computer parts in line with other places. They still sell Monster stuff so they aren't trying too hard but it's a start
