Best Buy stays in business because of home theater sales. That's it. Tremendous amount of margin, even when you're getting deals.
I sell PC's at Best Buy right now (not for much longer -- trying to get a job in the automotive industry).
Yes, there is profit involved for us in service contracts. Not to say they're not worth it, though. After dealing with technology all day, I guarantee you this: stuff breaks. It just does. A lot. And for the most part, especially with computers, getting the manufacturer to cover anything under warranty is generally a headache. Minimum two week turnaround time, occasional shipping charges, poor tech support, call centers based in India among other things.
I'm sure you've all heard horror stories about Geek Squad. I know the SOP for product coverage inside and out, and it does cover quite a bit. Just need to make sure the people you're dealing with are following the rules, which doesn't happen sometimes. RARELY but sometimes.
