Coach Banks (for the third time)

We have the 39th ranking in total defense. And 49th in passing efficiency defense. Wow. That deserves a "top assistant" award if anything does. Btw... our pass rush has basically disappeared against better teams. Our "strength" of defense was shown to be fragile last week giving up a record breaking performance to a guy that was a former walk-on. If Heupel doesn't try and improve this defensive unit/staff, it will probably end up being his eventual downfall. If he sits pat heading into '24... it will tell us a lot.

Shouldn't be. We are still trying to make up ground from a decimated defensive roster. And coach Banks has done a good job of masking deficiencies (until you cant anymore and you have a collapse) and helping this team win and people in the profession recognize that. It's just SOME of our own foolish fanbase that can't see it.

Do you think he will produce a championship caliber defense?
I think it is entirely possible. He has proven he can show consistent improvement year by year. Before the Mizzou game, our team defense was ranked in the top 20. Alabama is ranked 22. A defense that is complementary to our offense is always going to lose the time of possession battle, as CJH has repeatedly stated. In the end, it is all going to hinge on recruiting. Ironically enough, Willie Martinez is one hell of a recruiter, second only to Glenn Elarbee on our staff.

doubt anyone here has the expertise to answer that question accurately. I know I don't.
VN would be some combination of Dooley's special teams, Butch Jones' catch phrases, Pruitts anger and roster management, Sunseri's defense, and Clawson's '08 offense.

Translation: If Josh Heupel cannot see football as clearly as me, it will cost him his job.

The only Tennessee coach to win that award was David Cutcliff in 1998 and he was a finalist in 1997. Alex Golesh was a finalist for this award last year and for good reason. In my opinion Banks' agent knows the optics are not good, have not been good over the last 3 seasons and is leveraging a meaningless nomination for additional buzz and hype.

Defensive total offense given up this year to opponents that matter, Florida 349 yards 29 points, South Carolina 333 yards 20 points, Alabama 358 yards 34 points, Kentucky 444 yards 27 points and Missouri 530 yards and 36 points, current conference record 3-3, number one team in the nation here this weekend.

It's sad that the only credit Banks gets comes from outside of VolNation. The guy has been constantly improving our defense. Sure, we've seen a couple of outliers, but he has gotten the defense ranked in the top tier where we were 90th in year one. Remember, we were ranked 70th in team defense with Defensive guru Cornbread, BEFORE everyone left when Pruitt got axed. Banks deserves credit.
He's terrible at making adjustments during the game

Lack of talent is one thing but they just didn’t look like a D that really gave a rats a$$ Saturday. I don’t understand the fight-no fight attitude. They are a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get.
Well said Forrest.

Banks has shown year to year improvement twice in a row, significantly this year. Thats plenty good enough for me. If we had this year's offense and last year's defense we would be Florida right now, desperate for that 6th win that is not going to happen. Next year the defense will improve more, and the offense should get back on track with Nico. I expect great things indeed. We should end this season 10-3, that's pretty damn good with our still-shaky depth.

Did the guys who wanted Butch, Dools or Cornbread fired, were they "fans"?
To varying degrees. A lot of it depends on how quickly they jumped on the FIRE "________" train and how insanely they screamed it.
