Coach Kellie Harper fired

You understand how average works right? 4th of 14 nor 20-14 (with the strongest schedule in the nation) is not average.

There are TWO….. programs who have won 30 games this year.

We have not been mediocre.
None of you CKJH backers ever address the 12-37 complaint. 49 games against ranked teams and her teams won TWELVE.

Care to discuss?

Easy answer...You win your share of those games against the elite. Something they haven't done in a long time. You think Pat Summitt scheduled those games to lose them? 12-37 and weak recruiting did Kellie in.

The difference is though that Kellie was never going to win a high percentage of those games against the good teams. She never has - and there was a 15 year sample size to look at when we hired her. I'm not saying the easy road is always the best road, but the easier road sure would have made her tenure look better on paper (and that most definitely would have bought her another year, maybe two).

One thing I’m noticing is everyone who was “blindsided” by this seem to be those closest to the program. Which means they were all living in a vacuum.

Most people with common sense knew the writing was on the wall watching most of this season. Hard to believe how stunned they all seem.

I think they really just expected White to be OK with the mediocrity because Kellie was a LVFL, friendly and kind. Like she wasn’t being paid 7 figures to win basketball games or something.
All of THIS!

Right after you discuss:
4th in the SEC (KJH worst finish)
NCAA Tournament
First round win
Banked buzzer beater from the SEC Championship hame
4th Consecutive 1st round WNBA draft pick
20 wins

You explain that fairly and I’ll comment on the ranked opponents.

There was a clip on Finebaum today where he said "He's hearing from a lot of angry Lady Vol fans upset about the decision." This is why you don't hire from the Summit tree anymore - when it ends (as it has both times) it's bad. People have an inability to separate out their feelings towards Kellie the LVFL player, and Kellie the coach. If she didn't have that LVFL moniker attached to her name, every national media outlet would be saying this was a great decision .... as would most Lady Vol fans.

This. If she was a Vermont alum or alum of some other random school, a lot of the people furious over this wouldn’t be furious. Firing one of your own is hard and always ends with hurt feelings. Look at how things ended with Johnny Majors. His relationship with the university was strained for many years after he was fired, and there were a lot of fans who were outraged at his firing.

Not comparing Kellie to Johnny but the situations are similar. In both cases, it was time to move on. In both cases, borderline blind loyalty to an alum created a lot of anger and hurt feelings. If we were to hire Kara Lawson as some have suggested, we risk the same situation five years down the road. Hire outside of the Pat tree. Pat’s legend will live on forever, but it’s necessary to bring in new blood.

BINGO.

Same folks who tried to convince us that Danny White doesn't care about social media posts.... You and I both know he was damn well reading those replies and tagged comments ALL season long. It was a snowball of negativity that grew so large by midseason, it was essentially impossible to stop. It crescendoed with one final desperation heave by SC ... and just like that, it was all over for Kellie.

You can't defend it...It's hilarious that none of the coach lovers can defend 12-37 at UT.

Do you see the problem with pairing 4 straight WNBA 1st round picks with "12 -37"?

I don't think you do.

That poll is dated and was always skewed by the heat of infighting and acrimony. Part of that was people dissing Kellie, which is no way to proceed, and naturally provokes a defensive response. She's a LVFL. I'm basing my appraisal on what I've seen posted today.

As I said earlier, I think a lot of true fans who wanted Kellie for another year are embracing the future today. They may be sad in one respect, but they are also enthused by the opportunity and the fact that DW takes the LVs seriously and is going to do his all to bring us back. I am hoping that it ends up bringing all Vol fans together, whatever their first-choice sport. We have a built-in pool to rapidly expand our WBB fan support right here. Everything school.

LVs are a great heritage. We need a big jolt now. We need, in my opinion, a new coach, very talented, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic, and who wants to make their own way at a "name" place that offers them premiere opportunity, support, and the world's greatest fan base, and who does not feel like they are under Pat's shadow. That would make them more like Pat than anything else could. Pat was always making her own way like a natural-born champ.

There is no risk that Pat won't always be revered. I absolutely do not mean that. But we have to reach kids too young to remember her. We have to be the "now" place. And paradoxically, that will keep Pat forever young.
This is an employee of the UT athletic department. Everything they post reads like a polished press release.

Yeah if you’ve got that level of talent on your roster you have to have something to show for it against ranked competition.

Last season we had two top draft picks on one team and essentially same the year before with Burrell and Horston.

I’ve been campaigning for Scott Rueck all day. Really think he’d be great. The only downside (for me) is he’s not a big media personality. (You can be a media personality without the drama.)

When it’s time to step in between the lines though, that clipboard of his is fire! I want to see a new brand of basketball especially on the offensive end.
I think he is the guy, again just my gut here. But Oregon State is dropping to a lower conference next season, and the time to get him is now. The guy can coach his ass off.
