This season was a down year. In her prior 4 seasons, Kellie had an overall win percentage of 69% and 71% in conference.Isn't it sad when a great "bar" is Sweet Sixteen and good winning percentage is 19 and 12 or whereever we are
We are Tennessee and we should "aspire higher"
Again, only 7 teams have had back to back S16s over the previous 2 seasons and the LVs are in that set.
The landscape of women's basketball has changed and there is a lot more parity than before. There are a handful of coaches that would be clear upgrades over Kellie but they ain't gettable or movable.
Look, this team and coaching staff certainly aspired higher than their current record. In fact, I would bet that there are at least 25 teams that began the season with serious aspirations to at least make the final four and maybe 100 where the fans had that aspiration. The tricky thing about the final four is that only four teams actually make it through the gauntlet, regardless of their aspirations.
The LVs enter this tournament with a very good chance to make it the S16 and no one would say it was crazy that could make a run to the final four. They are a very competitive team who remain in the conversation.
I am gonna revisit "the play" just one last time. Let's imagine the odds played out and Cardosa clanked her shot of the back rim. The narrative would have been that Kellie goaded Dawn into taking a terrible shot (your last chance comes down to a 3 pointer from a player who had not shot one all season???) and Dawn would have looked dumb, very dumb for having her main paint threat hanging around the perimeter. But the shot banked in (and Cardosa did not call bank) and Dawn is a genius and Kellie is the dumbest coach on the planet. It is a game of fine margins.
Kellie is a solid coach who does a great job motivating players,. If she can't pick up the pace on her recruiting, she will putter out in the next two seasons. through the portal, she has done pretty well but there is not enough depth, in terms of quality players on the bench. If she and her staff can solve that dilemma, I think she can bring the LVs back to prominence,
