Coach Martin & Memphis Recruiting

Memphis is S St Louis... IMO

I think we can still pull a kid or two here and there from the Memphian area, but we aren't going to close borders west of Nashville no matter who we would've hired. Memphis is SEC W and Memphis turf, and the AAU circle WILL keep it that way for the short term at least. Pastner continues to flop with top talent and we could possibly get in the door though. I think if we do get players from Memphis it will have just as much to do with Pastner's failure as it will our ability to recruit there.

I'm sure he'll spend some time recruiting in Memphis. On the other hand, he can sign players from Timbuktu for all I care, as long as they can win games in the SEC.

I hear they have some good raw talent in Timbuktu.

Believe me, trying to recruit the Memphis kids IS NOT the answer for long term health of our program....we have a nice thing going in the Atlanta area....now if a Memphis kid shows great interest in our program....great...recruit him....IF he has qualified and proven his character extensively....otherwise, concentrate on Georgia, NC, South Carolina etc area and with the addition of a Midwest kinda guy there as well....forget this obsession with the Memphis kids and move on.....

I briefly touched base on this topic yesterday and after discussions with a few old Memphis friends I came to the, hard to believe, conclusion that hiring an African American coach will open a couple of more doors to UT, specifically in a city like Memphis. It's already had a small effect in regards to the perception of the Hill by some and UT will be added to some recruiting lists by players because of CCM. I don't know how that turned into a racists base thread, but you guys know how the dramatics flow on here.
Its not racist it is what is, and this coach scares me and I am a Memphis fan! If he wins its over

I feel you don't need a recruiting base like you do in football. In basketball you only get a few players a year so you go after the best that fit into your system and hope they like what they see. If you can recruit you can recruit.

Memphis will always be mostly a waste of time for Tennessee coaches. Cherry pick a few kids when you can, but don't let it become a giant time sink.

Yeah catdaddy I'm not sure that's legal. I gotta call somekinda sumtin a foul, a technical, an unsportsmanlike conduct something on that one. It could only be worse if you said UT football Vandy BB lol:swoon3:

I honestly think people look at pulling for UT and Memphis like pulling for an MLB team and a AAA team, when it comes to football anyway. No excuses for basketball.

Here's something I can agree with you guys on: don't wear orange in the fall, and blue in the winter. Those two colors don't mix well. Trust me, guys, that type of stuff annoys me to no end. My days of trolling around volnation are done since you hired a coach. I can tell you that Memphis will be a battleground between Memphis, Arkansas, Utk, and Kentucky (as long as Cal is there) for the next few years. It's probably going to get ugly.

Memphis = failure. Not sure why he would even try when there is other spots with equal or better talent.

Wth???

And we need to get Stokes. He has big ties to UT and is a huge talent from Memphis that could get the ball rolling there in the future.

I go to college about an hour from Memphis. Most people in Memphis resent UT unless they are the upper class donors or Med students there. They don't want to go to UT regardless of the coach

Can he make a recruiting dent in the city?

Should he bring someone on staff w/connections specifically from the city?

Should he even make a great effort to recruit there or focus elsewhere?

Discuss.

Doesn't matter, he will be ok as long as he never attends a HS game there. If he does and If he bumps into a player he will get fired.

Yes, Mr. Pearl Lover. The only thing Pearl did wrong was a simple bump. You really need to wake up and accept reality.

Balogna, if a coach comes in here and wins consistantly and goes to the NCAA every year, and puts players in the pros he will be able to recruit anywhere.
Actually recruiting is as much about evaluating talent as anything else. There are hundreds of kids playing in division 2 that could make it in 1.
Juan Smith is an example, he was not offered by a division 1 team and he walked on and became a star at UT.
