Coach Martin & Memphis Recruiting

I'm not too worried about it. Josh will keep who he wants in town. Even Stokes, thought to be a lock for TN, is now saying that Memphis is by no means out of it. Oh, and he just happens to be playing on a Memphis based Nike AAU team this summer instead of the adidas Atlanta Celtics team. Read between the lines.

But what color socks will they be wearing?

We need to get that AAU coach with all the info to pull us some players.

You have any other questions you can pm if you'd like. Sarcastic comments on another thread are cute. Try to stick with the topics, then maybe you won't get so confused, so often.

From one on one with Chris Dortch

CD: What’s your recruiting philosophy?
CM: You try to keep local players at home, but the one thing about Tennessee, it’s a well-known, well-respected university. So we can go different places and recruit. But we’re not just going somewhere like to New York to say we got a guy from New York or a guy from California just because he’s from California. We want the best players available. But you also want guys whose families can drive and come see them play. Obviously Atlanta is huge. Memphis. Places like that.

Here's something I can agree with you guys on: don't wear orange in the fall, and blue in the winter. Those two colors don't mix well. Trust me, guys, that type of stuff annoys me to no end. My days of trolling around volnation are done since you hired a coach. I can tell you that Memphis will be a battleground between Memphis, Arkansas, Utk, and Kentucky (as long as Cal is there) for the next few years. It's probably going to get ugly.

Kentucky is inside with 2 or 3 Memphis kids from classes 2013 through 14(?) right now.Cal really wants them and there is a ton of mutual interest. Memphis won't hold them both, if they even hold one. They are studs. Cal is in Memphis sometimes 2 times a week recruiting. That's just fact. You WILL see A few Memphis studs suiting up for Kentucky. Get ready for it, or it will hurt that much worse.

UT can recruit Memphis. Pastner is not extremely strong at the moment. He is riding high on being able to sign a few recruits. His coaching at this point is leaving a lot to be desired. I am born and raised in a town a few miles north of Memphis. For every blind follower of him you find someone who questions his coaching ability at this point, as well as leadership abilities. He got his raise because Oklahoma was willing to try the same antics UM did. Hire a coach for on the job training because he might get a blue chip. He didn't get his raise based on performance necessarily. Adonis Thomas better have a good year or Memphis will be singing a much different tune.

I think UT could possibly be successful recruiting Memphis through the next few years based on the performance of Pastner.

Thanks for giving me a good laugh this morning.

Thank your Memphis Tigers for giving me a laugh everytime I watched them play basketball this season. It was like getting to watch a trainwreck but not feel bad because nobody actually got injured.

Couple of things I've seen reading this thread: 1)people comparing football recruiting to basketball recruiting in Memphis, and 2)comparing West Tennessee to Memphis.

1)Completely different animal IMO. Football's always gone in there and gotten a kid or 2, even with Fulmer, who someone said hated Memphis. I don't think the pressure for kids to stay home or go anywhere but Tennessee is nearly as strong in football.
2) being born and raised in Madison/Gibson counties, I don't think the climate regarding Tennessee/Memphis is nearly the same in greater West TN as it is in Memphis itself. JMO. But Knoxville is a long way away to some kids who grew up over there and I'd say that's a factor. (perfect distance for me).

I hate to say I'd rather basketball just ignore Memphis, but I feel like entirely too much time is wasted recruiting kids who very rarely end up at Tennessee. Pursue genuinely interested players I say, but I'd spend a lot more time on Georgia/Atlanta and whatever midwestern connections Coach has.

Balogna,
Juan Smith is an example, he was not offered by a division 1 team and he walked on and became a star at UT.

Bologna, JaJuan Smith had an offer from MTSU amongst other smaller D1 programs. He decided to walk-on for Buzz at UT. He would have never invited to a BBQ during his junior year.
