Coach Martin's Twitter Account

The % of people listening to the radio is going down every year with new technology and the average age getting older and older. My kids are on an iPod. No radio.
And I didn't say my circle was a representation of everyone. Its a sample, and a pretty big sample. I don't know anyone who deals with ads anymore on the radio. I try to flip through sometimes or listen to talk radio, but I get bored with it. Callers are generally weak.

A lot of it is Internet radio.. Pandora/iheartradio, etc

Radio is nonexistent to me and others that don't listen to it anymore. That was the point of not hearing him on the radio. Of course radio is there and some people listen. Many more don't.

I listen to radio every day. Everyone I know that likes UT sports listens as well.

I don't know what more he can do to be visible. He's not a showman like Pearl but he's on the radio, he's traveling the state, he's putting on camps in Knoxville and other cities. He's active on twitter.

Attendance for hoops has remained good by the way.

While I've agreed with most of your opinions (I'm a Spotify and podcast guy), this fact is still wrong. Radio listenership is up year over year. Up 4.9% from 2005. Up 2.1% since 2009. Ages 18-34 had the HIGHEST growth.

In a renaissance for radio, more listeners are tuning in - USATODAY.com

Is that changing? Absolutely. Digital radio is going to continue to boom and yes, terrestrial radio is going to lose listeners over the next 2-5 years. But your original statement (and some follow up statements) have just been incorrect. You are basing things off the habits of you and people like-minded. Just trying to clear it up. I'm paid to know all of this crap.

Then it appears I am wrong.
Or maybe I'm ahead of the times. I haven't been in a car or at home in two years and listened to radio. I used to listen to morning show, noon and 3:00 every day. Now, I will seldom try to catch any. Its my opinion that more people my age are headed that direction.

For arguments sake, the growth % each year over 7 years is, say, .6% growth per year from 2005. How does that % compare to population growth? Is it possible there is an increase in radio listeners but an overall % of market reduction?

So you don't listen to sports radio and you don't have Twitter, but you think Cuonzo needs to speak out more? Could it be that you don't hear from him because you refuse to consume the primary forms of communication that Cuonzo and virtually every other head coach use to communicate with the fan base? He hits the "tweet" button and instantly communicates with 36,000 fans. That's effective.

He just finished a couple of stops on the Big Orange Caravan, but you didn't know about those because you don't listen to the radio. I guess you don't visit UT's website or receive their emails, either?

What exactly should he do to reach you as a fan? Carrier pigeon? Go door-to-door? Communication is a two-way street, man.

Hey smartass, I don't have a problem getting info about Butch and football. The topic comes up, and I don't Twitter or sports radio. What does that tell you. It tells you one coach is doing more than the other

I'd like to know how many season ticket holders you guys think follow twitter.

I do. The couple I ride to games with does. When I look around at people in the games they are checking their twitter app during timeouts.

Just cause you're out of touch doesn't mean the rest of the fanbase is the same. My 60 year old parents both have twitter.

Calm down Cletus. It was a question. Congrats, you know people on Twitter. I don't know how the hell you know people are looking at Twitter apps all over the arena, but I'm sure you didn't just make that up anyway. How many followers does CM have?
And ftr, when I am at games, my internet on my phone seldom works. I'd like to know which company all those people use to check.

Interesting article about some of the recruits who may have received this letter. I remember watching this game as an 8 year old. Enjoy!!

When Temple came to Tennessee 35 years ago this week, what happened was one of the more bizarre memories of the Ray Mears Era.

After 40 minutes, the Vols walked off the floor at Stokely Athletics Center an 11-6 winner in the lowest-scoring game of the modern era in college basketball.

The date was Dec. 15, 1973, the championship of the Volunteer Classic tournament. Temple coach Don Casey didn’t want to run with the Vols and had his Owls hold the ball for 32 of the 40 minutes.

Mears refused to budge from his zone defense so virtually nothing happened. Freshman Ernie Grunfeld scored to break a 5-5 tie with 12:44 left in the first half and Temple stalled until the break.

The second half passed without a field goal by either team. John Snow hit a technical free throw to make it 8-5 with 17:58 to play and the Owls went back into the deep freeze. Snow hit three more foul shots in the final seconds.

The 1973-74 Vols finished 17-9. The shot clock wasn’t introduced to the college game until 1985.

I remember listening to this game with my dad! John Ward did a great job announcing even a game like this! I don't remember if the crowd booed a lot, but I'd say they did.

CM has @35k Twitter followers. There are hundreds of thousands of fans and alumni, so that's less than 5%.
That's about what I thought.

But how many of those alumni couldn't care less about athletics? Where you're getting 5% is mind boggling because you have a concrete number of followers, yet comparing it to a guess. It doesn't work that way.

What does butch do more than Martin? The reason you hear more about football is because it pays the bills for UT and the KNS. So they run stories every day on the team. Same for the local news. There is much more interest in football so the media provides more coverage. If anything you should blame the media for not covering basketball. Martin is doing anything less that butch, he just gets less media coverage. Butch tweets, goes on radio shows, etc. but football is such a big deal that you that about every little thing.

Cuonzo spoke at the school I teach at back on May 2nd. He spoke for our athletic banquet. Did a good job. He's just not the media hit or dynamic speaker that Pearl or Kiffin or Jones is, so he doesn't put himself in that front too often. Can't blame him. What can he really say? Everyone knows that we've been teetering on the edge for two years now, and we need a big year. We started off rough, got better, and a few losses kept us from the NCAA. Just gotta start over, and try to get some big wins early in the season.

I don't have a twitter, but you can still read Martin's tweets (and any other person that doesn't have a private account) on any web browser. I just bookmark his twitter and read it occasionally. I don't get an update like people who follow him when he tweets, but you can still keep up with his tweets or anyone else for that matter.
