Excerpt from official release:

"The University of Tennessee Athletics Department has announced that senior center Major Wingate has been dismissed from the basketball team for a violation of team rules."

“I am disappointed and discouraged in some of the decisions that Major has made,” head coach Bruce Pearl said. “While he has made some progress in certain areas over the last several months, I am unable to allow him to return to our team this season. However, we will continue to support him academically as he progresses towards earning his degree. This is one of the most difficult decisions that I’ve had to deal with but, it is the right thing to do.”

Wingate started 29 of Tennessee’s 30 games in 2005-06, ranking third on the team with 10.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

That's sad. I'm sure Coach Pearl made the decision he felt he had to make.

I'm sure he's had plenty of chances to get his act together.

Is there a chance Jamere Hendrix will be allowed back on the team this year?

Is it too late for him to join the football team? He could stand beside Asumnu on FG blocking plays, he wouldn't even have to jump. :rock2:

Seriously though... sucks for Major. He got in "trouble" earlier in the Summer and was already on a probation type thing with Pearl, wasn't he? Sad that his career at UT ended this way.

I assumed Hendrix was gone for good.

Sorry to see Wingate leave, he was the most improved player last year.

I wonder if Hendrix and Wingate both got kicked off for the same reason. :cool2:

Easiest $30 I ever made was taking it from Major in a poker game while he was high. Second easiest $30, was taking $30 more from him when he bought back in. I am convinced that if he would have had all the money from his bank account, in cash, he would have continued to bankroll me all night...him and that ugly snake of his.

I hate it for Major because I really liked him but I have enough faith in Pearl that if he's made this decision, it was justified.

I couldn't help but laugh out loud at therealUT's post - maybe that contributed....

I think Major Wingate went to high school in South Carolina.

This is regrettable for Major Wingate, but it is a further indication of how good a coach that Bruce Pearl is, he makes the right decision when faced with a player problem. These kinds of decisions will serve the team and the University of Tennessee well over the years.

This is not a problem. Major sucked and Bruce got about as much as anyone could ever get out of him last year. He will not be missed.
